Artificial intelligence is evolving at an unprecedented pace—what does that mean for the future of technology, venture capital, business, and even our understanding of ourselves? Award-winning journalist and writer Anil Ananthaswamy joins us for our latest episode to discuss his latest book Why Machines Learn: The Elegant Math Behind Modern AI . Anil helps us explore the journey and many breakthroughs that have propelled machine learning from simple perceptrons to the sophisticated algorithms shaping today’s AI revolution, powering GPT and other models. The discussion aims to demystify some of the underlying math that powers modern machine learning to help everyone grasp this technology impacting our lives, even if your last math class was in high school. Anil walks us through the power of scaling laws, the shift from training to inference optimization, and the debate among AI’s pioneers about the road to AGI—should we be concerned, or are we still missing key pieces of the puzzle? The conversation also delves into AI’s philosophical implications—could understanding how machines learn help us better understand ourselves? And what challenges remain before AI systems can truly operate with agency? If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe and leave us a review on your favorite podcast platform. It's so easy when we have ADHD to skip, jump ahead, forget or avoid any stages needed to get something done. So, we're not spending any time on what happens then! Instead, we are returning to some unfinished business from Episodes 40 and 41 to look at how preparation can help. When we set the stage for success, we consider including preparation in ways we like to increase our ease, ability and happiness. Thank you for joining us for today’s episode. It’s true: ADHD significantly impacts our ability to care for our needs and responsibilities and to do so on time. Today we’re talking about how to get out of that bind. Life feels lighter when we are more accurate about how long things take and what is possible in a day. Getting real with time includes questioning what doesn’t work with typical advice, how it can lower stress and overwhelm, and allow more of you in your day. It’s time to experiment with what works for us to end the fight with time. Thank you for joining us for today’s episode. How do we struggle with time? Let’s count the ways. Today we are talking about not knowing where it goes, being surprised by the time and some small steps to increase our time awareness. This includes sharing Moira’s struggle to see and accept limitations such as 24 hours in a day, and things we can do to make time awareness easier by continuing our series on ADHD & Time, following ep. 44, the one about time blindness. Moira has an impromptu end of season 1 message for you. Not getting to a softball game on time, so many thoughts, feelings, and unrealistic expectations, and how that connects to ADHD, time management, and podcasting, are all fair game today. Moira needed to take a moment, take stock, have a reality check, get honest, be compassionate, and come up with a plan to continue with her day. That’s not even all of it—it was a busy 9 minutes! To experience less wear and tear in our lives, creating an insider’s guide helps to manage our limited resources—time, energy, and capacity to have them for what we value. With ADHD it's also easy to forget hard-won insight and knowledge, a personalized insiders' guide captures that. Moira shares breaking down what needs to be done, and having what needs to be on hand—to really do the things. Not sure if you are ready for that? She covers what to do if you are dipping your toe into the waters or are on a deep dive like her—when we have ADHD one size does not fit all. Getting started, continuing, and finishing are more complex with ADHD. Time and energy are limited supplies too. Trying harder or giving up aren't the only solutions. Slowing down to speed up has short- and long-term benefits. Continuing her progress with one particularly hard task, Moira discusses reducing effort and stress levels by creating ADHD friendly routines we like and work for us. Slowing down (and not refilling it with something else) creates capacity, effort, and time to develop our methods, then we speed up. Not by wiping the slate clean but by drawing from many convenient resources. Support me on Patreon and get exclusive content, early access to episodes, monthly group coaching calls, and more. Expect delays. Time blindness, resistance, procrastination, perfectionism, and indecision are hurdles that can cause slowdowns, stumbles, or create roadblocks. Moira’s talking about ways to see and measure growth when it’s hard to notice or even recognize. With ADHD one thing we can consistently count on is inconsistency. That doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Two steps forward and one step back is still forward . It does take us in the direction we want to go. Moira once again lets us into her life sharing a brief writing activity, her ADHD metaphor—a horse named Mabel and taking an ADHD friendly approach to change (aka an inconsistent one) that surprisingly, made a big difference. It has made it easier to spot unhelpful tendencies, improved her self-awareness, acceptance, and confidence in herself and her growth. All while still consistently finding humor in her consistently inconsistent ADHD. Support me on Patreon and get exclusive content, early access to episodes, monthly group coaching calls, and more. If ADHD is more about losing interest and motivation than it is about attention and concentration what does that mean for living with ADHD? Everyone uses dopamine for motivation, experiencing pleasures and rewards, but it works differently in ADHD brains. Understanding our dopamine differences and what our options are can help us on one level--to feel good and have more fun, on another it could be life-changing to be able to know what to do when we need more dopamine to get and stay motivated or ways to deal with being overstimulated. We are going to explore the idea of a dopa menu, popularized by Jessica McCabe of How to ADHD. Moira shares extra tips, ideas, and strategies for creating your own dopa menu. Content warning: This episode contains discussions of eating disorders; listener discretion is advised if you feel that listening may aggravate your suffering or complicate your recovery. Discuss with your support system as necessary. Moira has struggled with her relationship with food and her body for close to 50 years, only learning she had binge eating disorder after her ADHD diagnosis. Megan’s eating disorder was recognized first, as a teenager, and her ADHD diagnosis came in 2021. Both women know we do not need to suffer endlessly anymore and there is a path to recovery. ADHD contributes to disordered eating and obesity and getting help for any of this means understanding our experiences and having ways to get the help we deserve. Two women with ADHD, thirty years apart in age, squeeze in as many things about living with ADHD as they can. Similarities and differences in their experiences--including school, video games, being outdoors, bars, drinking, horrendous toilets, and why ADHD would be better known as a dopamine dysregulation disorder. All in all, it's young adults like Megan and changes Moira can already see that give her hope for a better future for all of us. Today we are talking about why parenting with ADHD is hard, especially for moms, ways to consider taking fewer rides on that struggle bus. We can’t care for others if we are spent. If we want to parent well, then we need to know how to care for ourselves. She also reminds those who aren’t tired, exhausted parents what we can do to help all of us suffer less. ADHD symptoms can go up and down over time. That matches my experience, how about yours? That idea is now backed by research showing that we can have good years when our ADHD symptoms are manageable, or maybe not even apparent and in the difficult years, ADHD shows up significantly causing problems at school, work, or in relationships. Today we are exploring how we can use that information to help ourselves, and our medical providers, in both the ups and downs. Hi, I’m taking a little time off and will be back with new episodes in January. I’m sharing an episode from the archive that builds upon the latest episodes. Today we’re discussing how self-compassion improves our ability to get started, deal with challenges, keep going and get along with others. We’ll be talking about proven strategies, and ideas. They won’t prevent us from making mistakes, but when we do, and we treat ourselves with compassion, the cost is not as high-- because yup, Self-compassion also reduces stress, self-criticism, and makes our life more ADHD Friendly. While many of us have realized that we must know how to take care of ourselves and our ADHD, there can be a tendency still to believe that we’re the problem or if only we could do this or that things would be better. But what if we can’t? Even if another younger version of us could? Our biggest consistency is often inconsistency and if we want to show up as our best versions of ourselves, it starts with self-compassion. Hey folks, I'm going to be taking a little time off in December and I thought that I'd reshare a few episodes from the archives. Today we're going to be returning to an idea that has been a reoccurring theme in the last few episodes—how to change things up that are no longer serving us. We’re talking about how to manage shame, shame spirals, and considering ways that can reduce our sense of shame. We’re unpacking how we manage and what we say to ourselves when we are wanting, hoping, or waiting for things to be different. We're also going to be considering how we can be a little bit kinder to ourselves, and a few ideas on how to move towards the life we want. The last two years have been challenging for all of us, and getting through December can be hard when we live in a world that goes on 24/7. We often forget that human beings deserve care and rest, to be able to thrive and not just push through. What if there was a way to try differently instead of harder? Moira's spent many years thinking about this and observing what goes on around her at this time of year and has tried many, many coping strategies including house and petting sitting. This year she found the words of Brigit Anna McNeill combined with the artwork of Jessica Boehman that captures a heartwarming way to experience winter--and Caring Week if you are so inclined. Moira and Coach Natalie Stark cover a lot of ground in this episode! How the word queer is important for many reasons, how not living and living in a van were both ways to have an ADHDFL (friendly life), the importance of access to treatment for ADHD, and why Natalie credits going to the hospital and therapy with saving herself from suicidal ideation and coaching with feeling worthy of building a life that she wants to live. We can’t have an ADHDFL when we’re running on empty, it requires capacity and breaking the cycles we get into. One way? Paying the ADHD tax upfront, on what we want to. When you have ADHD we quickly learn that help or understanding of our challenges isn’t always easy to get. Sometimes the way forward is to know how to give ourselves what we need, to have a more satisfying life. With knowledge comes power and when we feel empowered it makes it easier to be curious about trying different. Moira opens up about how she’s built skills to forgive herself, communicate more directly, advocate, and have a baseline of daily things to help get through the day. Self-compassion and ADHD don’t always come together easily BUT treating ourselves better, when we have ADHD, improves motivation, problem-solving, persistence, and getting along with others. There are proven ideas, actions, and strategies just for people with ADHD whose biggest consistency may be inconsistency, will make mistakes, and are more than likely listening to this with a heavy dose of skepticism. Self-compassion helps with stress, self-criticism, and living with an ADHD brain. Support me on Patreon and get exclusive content, early access to episodes, monthly group coaching calls, and more. Moira unpacks how, despite appearing highly capable, her traits of leadership, organization, helping, intelligence, and high expectations were all used to hide her struggles with ADHD. Moira speaks honestly about her most common struggles and no longer trying to hide them and giving up self-blame and judgment to make room for a better life with ADHD. Expanding the conversation about how ADHD is experienced is important because incorrect or limiting beliefs about ADHD impact our chance of a correct diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life. It is not well known that female reproductive hormones play a big role in our ADHD and overall health. They can make ADHD worse some days and better on others, because our symptoms vary across our cycle and stage of life dependent on the hormone levels. For those of us with ovaries, our ADHD is a changing state; and that’s still very new information for many. If we don't know what happens in our brains and bodies, how are we supposed to deal with it? Learn about ways we can help ourselves to slow or stop that rollercoaster ride. There are also treatment considerations for ADHD and hormones. We need to be able to talk to our health care providers about this and be able to ask for what we need. ADHD can leave us deflated, desperate, just trying to hold on, or maybe even clinging to a life preserver for dear life. This impacts so many aspects of our lives especially when we continue to put everyone and everything else above our own needs. Taking care of ourselves is hard to do and is even harder when you are not even on the list. How do we get ourselves on it, and not be the first thing bumped? Self-care is vital to our health and well-being and IS NOT SELFISH. When we have ADHD, our capacity to function, lifespan, and dare we say it, even our ability to enjoy life, depends on swapping out that life preserver to put on our oxygen mask first. Moira shares experiences and examples from the last three years, including healing from a brain injury, about how we can rebuild trust in ourselves by using our own lived experiences to make decisions in our own best interests (she may have shot herself in the foot a few times in the past). She discusses ways to build an ADHD Friendly Lifestyle using both our strengths and challenges to help create a world that works for, not against us, tossing us a few reminders along the way about what we can do when (not if!) we forget to do the things. Change is coming, whether we like it or not! If you thought ADHD was running the show, it ain't got nothing on our hormones but it doesn’t have to be chaos all round. It turns out it’s not so mysterious or unpredictable, even in perimenopause. Moira shares in detail the process she used to better understand her daily experiences—moods, energy, medication side effects, and both her ADHD and menstrual symptoms and then what might be done with that self-understanding. Her first step was to do nothing. The goal is to increase life satisfaction and taking a few steps at a time, with any changes being ones that fit for you. When things go awry, let's try asking, "what happened?" instead of "what's wrong?" and see where it gets us. She covers a number of ADHD friendly ways that have helped and what we can do knowing that it is WHEN (not if) we forget all of this. The outtakes were so good, I couldn’t leave them out. Just like your favorite show’s outtake reel, these pieces may seem a bit more disjointed than a regular episode, I’ll use musical cues for when we switch topics. We start off lightly sharing our struggles with the question, “how are you?”, and then Roxie goes deep sharing how learning at 12 yo her father was black called into question her identity and ultimately helped her find pride. Then Roxie puts me into the hot seat asking me a few questions too. You might be able to tell when I become very passionate about one of my favorite things. ADHD Coach Roxie Martin shares her decades-long journey to diagnosis at 50, and what it was like for her as a new mom with a suspicion of having ADHD. Her desperation led her to self-acceptance and then giving back as a coach. Moira and Roxie both speak about how transformative understanding their ADHD has been as late-diagnosed women, and now coaches. Their growth in self-worth and joy are big pieces of their ADHD Friendly Lifestyle. We cover a lot here--why medications are a pillar of successful treatment, and no longer a last resort, how to figure out if ADHD medications are working for you, when to consider a non-stimulant, and what to expect with side effects. Plus, 2 tools can be used in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of ADHD. For my fellow monthly cyclers, there’s some help with our individual monthly experiences, week by week, to make informed decisions for our health and well-being.
