Join me as I interview Durga Leela, creator of Yoga of Recovery , a platform where she introduces the ancient healing traditions of yoga and Ayurveda to bring you along a truly practical healing pathway. In her program, "Between the Mat and the Meeting: Ayurvedic Healing for all Addictive Tendencies", Durga reframes our understanding of the problem of addiction as well as the solution from an Ayurvedic perspective. "The goal of recovery is not a narrowly constrained model of symptom reduction, but a quality of life process of ongoing growth."
"People have a lot of low-level addictive behaviors that are largely ignored, i.e. food, relationships, Internet, shopping. We're trying to get on the outside what we can only get on the inside. At the heart of all addictions is the craving for connection, with Self, with other."
Ayurveda brings the concept of the individual ("this unique body-mind") into restoring our health versus the Western disease-based medical model. Yoga and Ayurveda offer us the opportunity to live up to our true potential. We are empowered to become something more than our ailments.
In her 12-week course, "Beyond the Mat and the Meeting: Ayurvedic Healing for all Addictive Tendencies", Durga introduces some of the following concepts:

  1. The cause of addiction according to Ayurveda.
  2. The role of the gunas (the qualities of the mind) in our lives.
  3. The interplay of the elements of nature - how the macrocosm reveals itself in our mind-body - the microcosm.
  4. A new operating system - how can we live a truly fulfilling life?
  5. The importance of our constitution - our unique mind-body system - to our evolution.
  6. How different mind-body systems react to stress - the importance of cultivating awareness.
  7. How to begin to identify signs of imbalance in our lives.
  8. Making time our ally - the role of time in our recovery and evolution.
  9. Everything we digest (mind, body, spirit) contributes to our prosperity or decline - how to restore our body's innate intelligence and remembering our true nature.
  10. Recognizing the addictive tendencies of the doshas.
  11. How to interact with or counsel different dosha-types under stress.
  12. Healing from early traumas. Considering detoxification therapies.

"Recovery from addiction requries a shift in awareness, a realization that you have the capacity to create something new." In her heart-full programs, Durga Leela offers us the opportunity to shift our awareness, to awaken to the realization that we have the capacity to create something new in our lives.
