Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro Faces Scrutiny Over Ellen Greenberg Case

Ellen Greenberg, a 27-year-old teacher, was found dead in her Philadelphia apartment in 2011 with 20 stab wounds. Initially ruled a homicide, her death was later controversially changed to suicide, sparking ongoing efforts by her parents to reopen the case.

As state attorney general, Shapiro’s office reviewed the case in 2022 and upheld the suicide ruling but later referred it back to the Philadelphia DA amid conflict-of-interest concerns. Critics raised questions about Shapiro's alleged ties to Greenberg's fiancé’s family, which his office denied addressing as "unfounded accusations."

In July 2023, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court agreed to hear the Greenbergs’ challenge, which seeks to question the authority of medical examiners when evidence suggests errors.
