This research paper examines a new deep-learning approach to optimizing weather forecasts by adjusting initial conditions. The authors test their method on the 2021 Pacific Northwest heatwave, finding that small changes to initial conditions can significantly improve the accuracy of 10-day forecasts using both the GraphCast and Pangu-Weather deep-learning models. Notably, the improvements seem to stem primarily from correcting analysis errors, rather than model errors.
