Sound Art Curator, Co-Founder of the Upstrike Project, and Freelancing Percussionist Karen Yu stops by to talk about her PASIC 2023 performance in the New Music Research Sessions and the piece’s relationship to Hong Kong today (03:10), her work as a Freelancing Percussionist in Hong Kong with the HK New Music Ensemble and the UpStrike Project (16:00), her career as a Sound Art Curator, how she supports artists in these spaces, the concept of “new music” and the challenges of promoting it (26:20), growing up in Hong Kong and getting into music (47:40), moving to Canada to finish high school, getting used to a new education system, and the nature of being multilingual (54:00), getting her undergrad and masters at McGill University (CA) (01:09:10), moving back to Hong Kong and starting her life back there (01:25:20), and finishing with the Random Ass Questions, including discussions of creativity, her experiences as an Asian woman in percussion, Taiwanese poetry, translating between multiple languages, the competitiveness of Karaoke in Hong Kong, and great visual art (01:32:30).
