Why Brad is obsessed with The Shining
Manage episode 446354123 series 3609897
Welcome to Never Enough, the podcast that's obsessed with obsessions: the things we love and why, the enduring interests that draw us in and keep us coming back for more.
My name is Joan Ruzsa and I'll be your host. On this episode I'll be talking to Brad Hart about his obsession with Stanley Kubrick's film The Shining. Brad is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, comedian, playwright and lover of film. He talks about his introduction to The Shining at a young age, and the feelings it brought up for him. Not just fear in response to the obvious horror elements, but something else. A feeling that even in the moments that were ostensibly innocuous or banal, there was an undercurrent of unease, of something being not quite right. And he's come back to the film again and again, in part to try to figure out what was going on under the surface to make him feel that way. We talk about Kubrick as a director, the way he turns fans into detectives, the impossible architecture of The Overlook Hotel, and the many fan theories that exist about the subtext of the film.
