Is It Normal When My Child...? with Dr. Christopher Bogart of Sasco River Center
Manage episode 352303405 series 3404928
One of the big questions parents ask us:
Is it normal when my child … ?
And it’s not just in our office. We hear it in school hallways, at gymnastics class, everywhere. Is it normal that my child doesn’t want to read for more than five minutes? Is it normal that my child can’t catch a ball?
Joining me and my co-host, Jessica Liedke, is clinical psychologist, Dr. Christopher Bogart, the executive director of the Sasco River Center, who works with children, adolescents and adults, conducting comprehensive psycho educational and ADHD evaluations as well as therapy services.
Dr. Bogart sheds light on what to look for in terms of sensory processing issues and the steps to take to get the needed help.
In this episode you’ll hear about:
- The kind of evaluation a clinical psychologist might make for kids who aren’t meeting certain benchmarks
- The next steps to take if your child has sensory processing issues, and how to know what kind of evaluation is needed (occupational therapist vs. clinical psychologist)
- The role vision and sensory processing plays in a child’s sense of self, self-esteem, speech and social development
- Signs to look for that might indicate a child is having difficulty with anxiety or stress (irregular eating patterns, sleep cycles, daily routines, etc.)
- The increase in school avoidance/school anxiety since the pandemic and resources available in schools for kids and parents
- Tips for parents on how to address vision or sensory issues or learning disabilities with children (for example, lead with strengths, help them set goals)
