In this episode we talk about Henrietta Lacks, an African American woman whose cells, known as HeLa cells, were taken without her knowledge or consent during a medical procedure in 1951. We discuss how her cells contributed to numerous scientific breakthroughs. However, the story of Henrietta Lacks is also a poignant example of ethical dilemmas in medical research. Her cells were taken without her consent, and for decades, her family was unaware of their existence and the impact they had on science.
