The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. In this episode, I speak with U23 rider from Continental Groupama FDJ, Ben Askey. Ben raced a mix of all disciplines when growing up racing in the UK as a youth rider. After the COVID pandemic, Ben stepped up to junior and had the chance to race internationally in road, cyclocross and mountain bike. Now as a U23, Ben puts his focus on road, spending the majority of his season living in France and dabbling in some cyclocross and MTB for fun and to keep up race fitness. Next season Ben is joining CC Etupes, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what he achieves in this new opportunity. You can find all episodes wherever you get your podcasts. In this episode, I am joined by rider for DSM Firmenich PostNL, Becky Storrie. Becky started her sporting interests with triathlon on the Isle Of Man, which took her to a high level and got her a scholarship at the University of Stirling. Becky's battles with chronic fatigue syndrome during her time at uni ultimately lead to her placing her focus on cycling. Becky tells me about this and how she started getting involved in bike racing in 2019. After spending lockdown racing on Zwift, in 2021 Becky joined the Movistar E-Racing team and she tells me about how e-racing benefited her career and progression. Becky joined DSM-Firmenich at the start of 2023, which was a big leap for her at the time, but she's since gained so many experiences racing across the globe.
