When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Learn more at www.lbi.org/kollisch . Exile is a production of the Leo Baeck Institute , New York | Berlin and Antica Productions . It’s narrated by Mandy Patinkin. Content Warning: This episode discusses murder, suicide, and other sensitive or controversial topics. Ooof. This one is a full-blown inferno, and it is STILL DEVELOPING. Meet the Zizians—who refer to themselves as—wait for it—the Vegan Siths. *Cue "The Imperial March"* This case unravels the shocking layers of a radical faction of rationalists who, despite preaching altruism, have left a trail of brutality in their wake . With at least four brutal murders and two additional deaths linked to the group, their ideology has mutated from intellectual posturing into a twisted labyrinth of suicide, faked deaths, crime, deception, and murder. This culty group, led by the enigmatic Jack Amadeus “Ziz” LaSota, the Zizians believe they are the masterminds of a better world—until their so-called rationalism turned into something totally irrational, super warped, and very, very dangerous. Murders, fugitives, and a tangled mess of legal chaos later, the question remains: Were these people already broken before they found rationalism, or did rationalism break them ? And with some members still at large, is the story really over? Buckle up—because this isn’t just another cult story. This is a real-time unraveling of a belief system gone deadly. Some call it luck, some call it fate—but one thing’s for sure, Death took a serious L on this one. Chelsea covers the outrageous tale of a man named Frane Selak, who seemed to have a VIP pass to disaster—but somehow always walked away. And Bailey tells the unbelievable story of Violet Jessop, a woman who kept finding herself in the middle of history’s most infamous maritime catastrophes… and lived to tell the tale. From fiery crashes to sinking ships, these stories will have you questioning whether some people are just built different. Just between these two, the Grim Reaper could count on both hands how many times he missed his mark. Thanks for listening! CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains content around child sexual abuse material and child exploitation. Listener discretion is advised. This case makes Dark Web Diaries look tame. This week, we dive into the horrifying Welcome to Video case—one of the darkest and most expansive child exploitation networks ever uncovered. Operating in the shadows of the internet, Welcome to Video was a marketplace of unimaginable crimes, where thousands of users exchanged Bitcoin for access to child abuse material. At the center of it all was Son Jong-Woo, an unassuming South Korean student who built and maintained the site, allowing it to thrive undetected for years. But in 2017, a single encrypted file linked to the site caught the attention of U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI)—and what they found was more horrifying than anyone could have imagined. This discovery triggered an international investigation spanning the United States, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, with law enforcement racing to uncover the full scale of the operation. By March 2018, authorities managed to shut the site down, but their work was far from over. Investigators were left combing through hundreds of thousands of videos, unmasking both the victims and the perpetrators behind the screen. What they uncovered exposed not just the website itself, but a massive underground network of offenders—many of whom were hiding in plain sight. In Part 1, we reveal how a cryptic digital trail led authorities to one of the most sickening and far-reaching child exploitation cases in internet history. But the real nightmare? The people behind it weren’t just lurking in the dark—they were everywhere. Thanks for listening! But this episode isn’t just about true crime—it’s also about bridging the divide between law enforcement and the public. When Joe isn’t catching killers, he’s behind the mic on ATO: Bridging the Divide, a podcast that dives into the untold stories of first responders, mental health, and the human side of policing. A deep dive into true crime, justice, and the men and women behind the badge—this episode has it all. Content Warning: This episode contains descriptions of sexual assault, violence, and human suffering. Listener discretion is advised. Alright, let’s rewind to September of 2007 where a man by the name of Robert Sparks was living a relatively normal life—at least, that’s how it looked from the outside. But inside his home, it was a different story. Robert Sparks had a reputation for being controlling and paranoid, especially about his wife, Chare Agnew. By September 2007, Sparks’ paranoia hit its breaking point, and a Dallas neighborhood would become the backdrop for an unthinkable crime. When police arrived at the scene, they weren’t prepared for the horrors they would find inside: three dead family members. 9-year-old Harold, 10-year-old Raekwon, and 30-year-old Chare. Sparks’ crimes were so barbaric, so personal, that even seasoned homicide investigators were unnerved. Even more bewildering were Sparks’ two stepdaughters 14-year-old LaKenya and 12-year-old Garysha huddled in a locked closet, traumatized with remnants of the previous night's horrors still on their faces. What happened in the Rochester home that night sent shockwaves throughout all of Dallas. People were horrified of the details of the crimes and all of Dallas PD was now turning to finding the fugitive who was on the run. A full out manhunt was underway. But what would unfold over the next weeks would add to the complex and totally bizarre components of this case: a mad car chase through Dallas neighborhoods, accusations of poisonings, and demands for secret audiocassette recordings to be used in proving Sparks' innocence. In this episode, we unravel the chilling details of the case, the trial that sparks heated debates about the crossroads of mental health and the judicial system. How do we judge the mind of a killer? Tune in on Friday, 2/14/25, for our sit down with Dallas PD's Joe King for a behind-the-scenes look at the case that shook Dallas in 2007. Thanks for listening! A routine custody exchange. A deserted highway. Two women vanish without a trace. On March 30, 2024, Jilian Kelley and Veronica Butler set off on what should have been a simple trip to pick up Veronica’s children. But when they never returned home, their loved ones knew something was terribly wrong. Their vehicle was later found abandoned near the Oklahoma-Kansas border, but there was no sign of the women. The unsettling clues left behind hinted at something far more sinister. As law enforcement launched an investigation, they began to uncover a dark and twisted conspiracy—one fueled by paranoia, power, and an insatiable need for control. The case would lead authorities to a secretive anti-government group calling themselves God’s Misfits , whose disturbing beliefs and extreme actions would shock an entire community. What happened to Jilian and Veronica that day? Who was behind their disappearance? And how did a bitter custody dispute escalate into something so horrifying? In this episode, we break down the chilling details of the case, the web of deception woven by those responsible, and the terrifying truths uncovered along the way. Join us as we unravel the mystery behind God’s Misfits —a case of control, delusion, and murder. As we discuss this heart-wrenching story, it's important to acknowledge the enduring impact on the victims' families. Clinton Butler, the father of Veronica Butler, has faced immense emotional and financial challenges following the loss of his daughter. To support him during this difficult time, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to help him retain his family home. Content Warning: This episode contains descriptions of violence, genocide, and human suffering. Listener discretion is advised. In this compelling and deeply introspective episode, we delve into one of humanity’s darkest chapters: the Holocaust. Beginning with a look at the state of Germany in the 1930s, we explore the political and economic collapse that created the fertile ground for Adolf Hitler’s rise to power and the horrifying events that followed. We discuss the establishment of Auschwitz, the largest and most infamous Nazi concentration and extermination camp, and examine the systemic and meticulous organization of genocide carried out within its walls. At the heart of this episode lies the chilling story of Josef Mengele, the so-called "Angel of Death." We unravel his background, exploring how his ambition, obsession with success, and fervent belief in Nazi ideology propelled him to become one of history’s most notorious figures. Mengele’s brutal experiments on prisoners, especially twins, are recounted with careful attention to detail, shedding light on the depth of his inhumanity. As we navigate through the horrors of Auschwitz, we also examine the psychological toll on survivors and the intergenerational trauma experienced by their descendants. We reflect on the importance of remembrance and education to ensure these atrocities are never forgotten or repeated. Finally, we follow Mengele’s escape after the collapse of the Third Reich, highlighting how post-war chaos and bureaucratic failures allowed him to evade justice for decades. This episode is a sobering exploration of the Holocaust, a tribute to its victims, and a call to reflect on the societal factors that allowed such atrocities to occur.
