Slave catchers trained hound dogs to hunt fugitive and runaway slaves, and return them to their masters; many slave masters used share cropping to keep free slaves in debt to them; many blacks were charged with minor offenses and sent to prison farms for free labor; black were used in many industries for free labor and built many structures, and tilled many fields of cotton, tobacco, and other produce; they were in charge of chores outside and inside the house, Cooks, Nannies, Butlers and Field niggers, (as referred to commonly by white masters) black people fulfilled one of these trades and in some case trained horses and tended to animals and land..Slave catchers worked in many cases with slave masters and local newspapers to alert slaves were runaways, and descriptions, and these slave catchers took pride in catching escaped slaves and returning them maimed, but not dead; and in some cases the better the condition of the slave the more money per slave... blacks were not considered human;
