We are all too familiar with the cycle of gun violence in the United States. This year began with two horrific mass shootings in California. In January alone, there were 40 mass shootings in this country, with 60 deaths. Gun violence is now the leading cause of death among children in the United States. But one of the places where we’ve seen some actual progress is here in Washington State. In the last two sessions, we saw new laws on things like ghost guns, high-capacity* magazines, and open carry. And this year's session is proposing landmark legislation on things like banning assault weapons, allowing lawsuits against gun manufacturers, and requiring permits, waiting periods, and training for firearm ownership. Renee Hopkins, CEO of the Alliance for Gun Responsibility, joins us to discuss the legislation, and to talk about why she's hopeful that things are finally staring to shift on gun safety in this country. *In the interview, I mistakenly refer to high-capacity magazines as high-caliber magazines. Thanks to listener Gordon Glasgow for spotting this!
