Consequences of Rejecting God (Amos 2:1-16)
God’s Prophet Amos delivered a message of doom for all of Israel’s neighbors who had historically persecuted the Hebrew people. At the time of Amos’ prophecies, Israel was experiencing prosperity as a nation. While the people enjoyed hearing about God’s judgment coming against their enemies, they were simultaneously living in violation of God’s Law.
Amos prophesied a judgment of fire and destruction from God against Moab. The Moabites were known for their hostility and vengeance against Israel.
Amos shifted his focus from the enemies of the Hebrew people to prophesy judgment against his own people in the Southern Kingdom of Judah. This transition was prompted because of their rejection of God’s Law and their refusal to keep His commandments. They had become idolatrous and deceitful, following the corrupt ways taught by their ancestors.
Amos turned his attention to the Hebrew people of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, condemning their widespread injustice. God specifically highlighted their sins, including human trafficking, mistreatment of the poor, corruption of the humble, sexual immorality, idolatry, and violations of the Law of God. Additionally, they exploited people by taking their clothing and food as collateral for loans.
The Prophet provided Israel with a brief historical account of the LORD’s provision during the exodus, their subsequent conquest, and their uncountable blessings. Amos prophesied their rejection of God would lead to unescapable judgment, culminating in a catastrophic military defeat.
Amos concluded this part of his prophesy just like he began it, with the hallowed phrase, “says the LORD.”
Has God changed? What are the consequences of rejecting God today?
Will God bring judgment on America? Will God bring judgment against you?
