This month we Party with two great sports entertainment minds. First Zoltan Berencsi from the Harlem Globetrotters. With over 2 decades in sports performing, directing and creating memorable moments and traditions. Zoli brings a wealth of insights as a perform to his role as a producer for the Globetrotters, and all of that experience into the Party in the Back for this month's discussion. Fresh off a world-wide book signing tour for his best selling book Furlosophy, Rob Wicall joins the the podcast. Rob also uses his powerful background as a performer to guide his insightful philosophy on game operations (and life). Zoli and Rob join Host Jon Cudo to two main topics: Pre-Game Traditions and Performing in Character. 2:00 Jon introduces the guests - Rob Wicall, a former mascot with over 20 years of experience, and Zoli Berencsi, the senior producer for the Harlem Globetrotters and a former professional mascot. The group catches up and shares some humorous stories from their mascot days. 4:00 The group discusses the growing trend of teams building unique pregame traditions to set the tone and connect with fans. Zoli shares how the Globetrotters have built iconic traditions like the Magic Circle and use of the Sweet Georgia Brown song. The group analyzes how effective traditions can create a sense of community and be passed down through generations of fans. 7:25 Rob tries to hijack the show and starts asking his own questions 😜 15:10 We look at examples of these traditions built on the team specific brands, like the Detroit Red Wings and Pistons, followed by an example from Atlanta United where the tradition is built on the history of the city. 21:10 A discussion about the Indiana Pacers in-game Rev It Up moment, that connect the city and team brands (known for racing) and drives a big hype moment by the crowd. We discuss additional examples where these moment trigger crowd noise and excitement. Before we close, Cudo gives some extra love to the Minnesota Vikings who put all of these elements into their iconic gjallarhorn and SKOL clap moments. 37:30 The discussion shifts to the importance of mascots developing a fully-realized character, rather than just performing generic "mascot" antics. The group analyzes an example of the Disney character Sadness performing a dance routine in-character. They emphasize the need for mascots to embody a distinct personality that is consistent with the team's brand. Plus the benefits of interacting with other entertainers in a consistent manner and as a tool in writing skits. 47:30 The group wraps up the discussion, with each guest sharing what they are working on next. Zoli discusses his social media presence and upcoming projects, while Rob continues to speak and author his philosophy book.
