When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. After an autism diagnosis, many parents struggle with finding services not only for their children, but for themselves and their families. Have you ever considered your life as an aging adult? What do you think will happen during the end years of your life? Some of us dream about the joy of being retired, enjoying family and living a care-free life. However, that's not everyone’s story. Unfortunately many older adults don’t have many supports to help them navigate the second part of life, which may include chronic illnesses, loss, and limited financial resources. Lynn Walls, founded the nonprofit Heaven Sent Day Care in Little Rock, Arkansas, for aging adults who need a place to go during the day, and to give comfort to their caretakers who cannot care for them full-time. This is not an ordinary adult day care center! Lynn has a heart for seniors and is passionate about helping them maintain their autonomy and their dignity. Learn how a cancer diagnosis sparked a nationwide movement to support children fighting cancer. In this episode of the Nonprofit Activator Episode, meet Micheal (Mike) Shaw of Team Jenny Bean, a small nonprofit that provides gifts and financial support to children diagnosed with cancer. Hear Mike's story of how his wife discovered a cancerous tumor on their 6-year old daughter's back which catapulted them into a world of tests, surgeries and more. As she was dealing with stage 4 cancer, his daughter Jenny decided to support OTHER children fighting their cancer diagnosis by purchasing toys so that they wouldn't feel alone. Their family rallied around this idea and instead of focusing on the devastation of cancer, they found a reason to celebrate other children.
