When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. It has a whopping 8,000 nerve endings, twice as many as a male penis, yet in many cultures little girls are forced into genital cutting or Female Genital Mutilation. In Egypt around 40 Million women and girls are survivors of FGM. Egypt, has the largest population of FGM survivors in the entire world.Why is that? Why does this surgery take place at such a large scale?Some say it’s fueled by female oppression and the desire to control women, others say it’s cultural norms and parents feeling pressured to conform.I had the honor of sitting down with Dr. Amr Seifeldin & Dr. Reham Awwad, the founders of Restore FGM center located in Mohandessin in Cairo, Egypt.Dr. Amr Seifeldin is one of a handful of doctors in the entire world who are trained to perform clitoral restorative surgeries and the only doctor in the MENA region specialized in FGM treatments. What is bodily autonomy anyway? Bodily autonomy is the freedom and right to choose what happens to your body, or the consent of the owner of the body before anything is done to their body.How can we apply bodily autonomy in birth? This IS a birth after all! There are no choices, the doctor has the final say.Wrong.
