- What Panama is globally known for
- the Panama Canal revolutionized international trade by making it easy quicker for cargo ships to travel
- The French tried to build and failed - dark times and bad engineering
- The US wanted to build a passage that canal to shorten the journey from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean
- Because before the canal
- If Spain wanted get cargo to Japan they would have to go under South America to its destination
- But at the time Panama was still part of the republic of Colombia
- And in 1904 Panama gave the US control of a 10 mile pieces of land where they could start building the canal
- The US basically owned this area until about 1999 where it was given back to Panama
- And they wouldn’t allow anyone to build on the land
- So the US helped Panama gain its independence in 1903
- The birth of Reggaeton
