This week Gerald Hector welcomes to It's Easy Son, Dr. Richard Lapchick. He is an eminent scholar, an endowed chair & director of The Devos Sport Business Management, and also the Director for The Institute for Diversity & Ethics in Sport. He is a well known national and international figure as it pertains to the intersection of sports, social equity and justice. He is the author of over seventeen books and six hundred articles. Over his career he has been a consistent voice on this topic, and is highly sought after to speak to groups, companies and professional sport leagues on how they can improve in this space. He is the son of former Boston Celtic legendary player, turned coach, Joe Lapchick. In this interview he shares how an incident at a local restaurant when he was seven years old, and the treatment his father received after recruiting Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton in 1950, shaped his future interests in equality, social justice and their intersection with sports. An athlete himself, listen in as he shares stories of how his own search for understanding why his fellow teammates of color lived lives that were totally the opposite of his experiences. His work has taken him around the world, and he has been honored many times over in this this field. He has been given numerous awards including nine honorary degrees, and was named "one of the 100 most powerful people in sport" for six consecutive years, and in November of this year was named the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian of the Year. He has also met with and shared friendships with Nelson Mandela, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, David Stern and so many more.
