1 My Mentors: Rick Melmer on Marriage, Parenting, Faith and Weathering Storms (South Dakota #12) 43:29
Today’s episode kicks off a new series where we explore the important role of mentors through conversations with my own mentors that have profoundly impacted my life. My guest today is Rick Melmer, who has held numerous influential roles, from serving as the superintendent of a high school and the secretary of education for South Dakota, to working as the dean of USD’s School of Education and the director of Leadership South Dakota. But beyond all of these titles, Rick has been a constant presence in my life since my sophomore year of high school. Over the years, our paths have crossed in countless meaningful (& funny) ways. I attended prom with his daughter. His family supported my wife and me financially while I was in seminary. I also had the honor of performing the funeral for his father-in-law. And his family has been a cherished part of the church I now pastor. I ask Rick about the 3 areas of life where I look to him as a mentor: being a husband and dad, weathering storms in his career and being a follower of Jesus. Rick provides valuable insights into the role of a mentor and the impact they can have on our lives. We also talk about the mentor’s Rick had in his life and advice on how to find mentors in your own life. I loved this conversation with Tori Hope Petersen, an author and passionate advocate for foster care. Tori starts the conversation by sharing the challenges of foster parenting (including how hard it is to say goodbye). The heart of our conversation is around breaking the unhealthy patterns in our life. Tori shares what this has looked like in her own life. Tori shares how to make hard changes in your own life (especially if you have childhood scars). Today I’m joined by Jenni Catron, a leadership coach, author and speaker with a passion to cultivate healthy leaders to lead thriving organizations. Right out of the gate, Jenni hits us with the powerful (and hard to hear) insight that oftentimes WE are the hardest people to lead. (Ouch!) Jenni and I talk about healthy ways we can lead ourselves, how to know if our team’s culture is good or bad and how to change the culture, whether we are in charge of the organization or not. Whether you're a business leader, pastor, or simply interested in personal growth, this conversation offers valuable lessons on leading yourself and others well. 1 How to Improve Your Emotional Health in 2025 with Therapist Jason VanRuler (South Dakota #11) 38:47
In today’s South Dakota episode (which wraps up our New Year’s series), I sit down with one of my closest friends, Jason VanRuler. Jason, a well-known therapist, author and speaker, joins me to talk about how to evaluate where you are emotionally and gives steps you can take to improve your emotional and relational health in 2025. My favorite part: Jason sharing a part of his own (broken) story, how he became a therapist, & his journey of finding God. Jason also gives us insight into addressing the hard parts of 2024 and tells us what we can do to make sure the difficult things we went through can help us grow in the New Year and beyond. Today, I’m wrapping up my New Year’s series with one of my favorite humans on the planet, Brad Lomenick! Brad is a leadership consultant, speaker, and author. More than anything, Brad is a connector. Brad knows everyone and he wants you to know everyone. He’s impacted my life in more ways than I can count (which is why I brag on him roughly 17 times a day)! In this episode, I pick Brad’s brain on leadership - how we can be the best leader possible in 2025, the importance of self-awareness, how to lean into spiritual moments as a leader, and how to have a Spiritual IQ. We also talk about how to find your giftings and identify giftings within those around you (hint: we could all learn to do this better!). At the start, Brad shares something that surprised me - dealing with insecurity after success. Don’t miss this powerful episode! Check out part 1 and part 2 of the New Year’s series. For the first episode in our New Year’s series, I asked one of the most positive people I know, Jon Gordon, to join us and talk about his “one word” concept. Jon is a best-selling author and keynote speaker who changed his life through changing his perspective (along with having a strong faith in Jesus). It turns out Jon isn’t naturally positive at all! Not feeling super positive this New Year? Not great with setting (let alone keeping) your resolutions? Consider choosing a single word to focus on instead. Why? Jon says, “it provides clarity and focus. It gives meaning, mission, passion and purpose.” Protip: Be sure to listen to the end when Jon shares advice he wished he had gotten earlier in life (it’s not what you think). In today’s conversation, I sit down with my friend, Jordan Montgomery. Jordan is a rising star in the speaking world and because of that, he’s spoken at events with John Maxwell and crossed paths with WNBA star Caitlin Clark. Jordan shares what’s been fun and hard during this season and then turns the table to ask me what I’m learning in my own life right now! As many of us know, professional success can make winning at home difficult. Jordan shares how he intentionally balances saying yes and saying no and the significance of spending time with God to discern life's true priorities. We also talk about encouragement, and how it’s both an art and a science, which means it’s something we can all learn to do better, even if it doesn’t come naturally. Jordan and I honor 4 specific people in our lives who have been encouragers to us. In today’s episode, I get to have a conversation with the amazing Megan Fate Marshman! Megan and I talk about seeing the messy parts of ourselves and how God can use our mess just as much as He can use our gifts (especially if we are open and willing to listen to His nudges). Two months back, Megan shared at Embrace (the church I pastor) and the response was INSANE. Like unexplainable. So I asked her what has changed in her preaching process and how she uncovers so much wisdom. She also shared how she’s gained an eternal perspective through grieving the loss of her husband. In today’s episode, I had the joy of interviewing the dynamic mother-daughter duo: Allie (Cooney) & Sandra Stanley. Being in the same family as influential pastor Andy Stanley, founder of North Point Church, Allie talks about the unique experiences, expectations and lessons learned from growing up in a family defined by faith, leadership and public attention. Allie, now married with a daughter of her own, has written a book with her mom exploring the dynamics of mother-daughter relationships. During our time together, they share heartfelt stories, practical advice, and offer a glimpse into what it was like being raised in an environment where Christian principles are not just taught, but lived. Allie drills down into why she still loves the church and has chosen to stay when so many others - especially pastor’s kids - have walked away.
