Much has been written about Manto. In his times, he was perhaps talked about more than his written works. Dragged into court, condemned by the custodians of culture, ridiculed by the scholars of “serious literature”, Manto lived and wrote as he pleased. He was asked why he wrote and he replied with a honest and witty article, “Main afsana kyunkar likhta hun”. Then he one upped himself by writing a critique of the article and of himself as a writer. --------------------------- Manto was incorrigible! Nothing could make him stop writing about the world as he saw it for as long as he lived. Not six court cases of obscenity, not the partition of his beloved nation and the difficult decision to move to Pakistan, not the abject poverty that drove him to near homelessness, not the bid of well-wishers to admit him to a mental asylum (meant to cure alcoholism). He lived till he wrote and then when he was told he couldn’t write anymore, he died. What he wrote about were taboo subjects, how he wrote them was taboo too.
