In this episode of the Pestgeek Podcast, holistic pest control management specialist Franklin "The Pestgeek" Hernandez sits down with Rollie Calzadilla to discuss a complex bird control project at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami. Rollie, an expert in the field since 2007, takes us behind the scenes of a challenging job where his team tackled 96 pigeon holes on a university building, each measuring 4 feet wide by 2.5 feet tall.
Rollie explains the meticulous process of installing individual nets over each opening to prevent pigeons from nesting and making a mess, as well as adding a large net on the interior for extra protection. He also shares the hurdles faced with previous bird deterrent methods, like spikes and sound devices, that proved ineffective, and how his experience has shaped a more effective approach to bird control.
Throughout the conversation, Rollie opens up about his journey in the pest control industry, from starting his own company after recognizing a gap in the market for specialized bird control services to the growth and development of his business. He talks candidly about the challenges of running a wildlife control business, the importance of proper pricing, and the physical demands of the job, such as working 65 feet in the air on a lift to install the nets.
