-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

James E. McGreevey, born August 6, 1957, is an American politician with a story marked by both significant achievements. His career began with a steady rise through the ranks of New Jersey politics. After serving as an assistant prosecutor and executive director of the state Parole Board, he was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly in 1990. He then became Mayor of Woodbridge Township in 1991, a position he held for over a decade. During this time, he also served in the New Jersey Senate from 1994 to 1998.

McGreevey first ran for Governor of New Jersey in 1997 but lost to incumbent Christine Todd Whitman. Undeterred, he ran again in 2001 and won by a landslide, becoming the 52nd Governor of New Jersey in January 2002. His early tenure focused on fiscal responsibility, closing a substantial budget gap without raising taxes. He also prioritized job growth, education reform, and initiatives in healthcare and auto insurance. He set his resignation for November 15, 2004, after a public speech on August 12, 2004 publicly acknowledging his homosexuality

The years following his resignation saw McGreevey navigate the complexities of criminal justice reform through re-entry and has written about his experiences in his memoir, "The Confession."

Now, two decades after his exit from the political stage, McGreevey is seeking a return to public office with a 2025 bid for Mayor of Jersey City. His candidacy marks a new chapter in his complex and compelling story, one that continues to capture public attention.
