Investing in a company is the same as being a part-owner of that company. You share in the profits and, some would argue, this means you also share some responsibility to understand how those profits are generated. When folks want to feel good about how that profit is generated, and want to know that it aligns with their own personal ethics and beliefs, they have the option to invest based on their beliefs and their values.
