Over the last few weeks Jesus has given some examples of how to love our neighbour. His way is a way of service. This is given by practical examples of how to show love by “paying attention to”. Today, Mark pus this into the form of a commandment, “Love your neighbour”. Perhaps if we change the term neighbour to brother or sister we can begin to understand the kind of love required. The object of our love has to be seen as someone important to us and the quality of attention given to them has to be equal to that given to a loved one. In fact it is in paying attention to them in this way which fulfils the commandment to love.
