News of the Times Episode 355 | 1875
As methods of murder go, strychnine is particularly painful.
Today we look at two poisoning by strychnine cases from 1875. Both used this method to poison their victim, and both had beyond the norm motives for murder.
Our first case takes place in County Durham with Elizabeth Pearson being allowed to stay with her family at her uncle’s. Her uncle, by marriage, had kept the furniture from Elizabeth’s aunt after she had passed – an action that seems to have annoyed Elizabeth immensely.
Our second case take place in London where a random poisoner seems to be on the loose. The gentleman in question hangs out in pubs, offering to help anyone recover quickly who has had too much to drink – with deadly consequences. An accountant by trade who is out of work, police are baffled as to the motive and intention of the serial poisoning unemployed accountant.
Two cases from 1875 involving poisoning by strychnine is today’s episode of Frightful Fridays.
