Do mothers feel safe to express their mental load?
The reason I ask is that I’d venture that most of us DON’T feel safe expressing our mental loads to the people closest to us.
When I say “feel safe,” what I mean is that mothers feel like they can be HONEST with their partners, family members or on social media without being gaslighted, questioned, disagreed with, or made to feel stupid for speaking their truth.
Many of us are afraid to say this is hard due to getting pushback or comments like well, you chose this. You chose to have kids. You chose this partner. But just because we chose something, doesn’t mean it’s not hard.
So that’s today’s episode – do you feel safe expressing your truth? If not, why? What is at the root of your hesitation?
In this episode you’ll hear about:

  • How expressing our truths is NOT an invalidation of someone else’s truth – it’s about being SEEN in the context of the village
  • That fear for speaking our truths could also be a cultural phenomenon; we’re afraid of being different or expressing our need for more support
  • The shared experience that results when we create more opportunities for mothers to express truths without feeling judged/shamed/wrong/ungrateful
  • Questions to ask yourself if you DON’T feel safe expressing your motherload: what would make you feel safe? What are you scared of?
  • How it went when I told my partner I wanted him to turn his phone off when he came home to be more present for the kids (hint: it went well)
  • The value in looking at these questions regularly, which can illuminate areas of our inner worlds we might not be aware of
