Three Strategies for Vocabulary Instruction
Manage episode 355373709 series 3411996
In this week’s episode, I’m continuing our discussion on teaching vocabulary. Teachers know that vocabulary instruction is a key component to increasing students’ ability to comprehend text, yet they struggle to find the time to teach it.
This episode will be exploring three ways to include vocabulary instruction through Word Walls, the Frayer Model organizer, and Word of the Week. Each of these strategies is easy to use and helps students see that words are more than definitions - words have a purpose and a function within the language.
In this episode on strategies for vocabulary instruction, I share:
- Word Walls - give students a clear location (bulletin board) to find the definitions of unit specific words
- Frayer Model organizer - help students see that words have functions beyond a definition
- Word of the Week - expose students to multiple words throughout the year while teaching and reviewing the function of words
