Fox News reported on Wednesday that President-elect Donald Trump will soon appoint a peace envoy to lead negotiations on ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. One of the agency’s sources promised “someone with a lot of credibility” to serve in a non-salaried role similar to Kurt Volker, who acted as Trump’s special representative for Ukraine from 2017 until 2019 (when he became embroiled in President Trump’s first impeachment inquiry).
During his recent presidential campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly vowed to end the war in Ukraine even before his inauguration.
On November 11, Finnish President Alexander Stubb said after a phone call with the U.S. president-elect that Trump should be taken more seriously regarding the Ukraine war. “We in Europe and the rest of the world need to understand that Donald Trump is very serious about getting a peace deal sooner rather than later. There’s a window of opportunity for these negotiations between the election and inauguration day,” Stubb told Bloomberg on Monday.
Also, on November 11, The Washington Post reported that Trump had spoken the previous week to Vladimir Putin for the first time since his reelection. The newspaper says he reminded the Russian president “of Washington’s sizable military presence in Europe” and urged Moscow “not to escalate the war in Ukraine.” The Kremlin later denied that any phone call occurred.
