The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. Phyllis Gobbell’s writing career spans four decades. Her history of publication includes both fiction and nonfiction, with a total of five novels and over thirty stories and articles in literary journals, anthologies, and magazines. One of her first stories appeared in the anthology, HomeWorks, in 1996, a collection of writings by Tennessee authors living at that time, including Alex Haley, Robert Penn Warren, and Peter Taylor.
Gobbell, a Nashville author, writes a little bit of everything. Two true-crime books, An Unfinished Canvas (Berkley, 2007; Diversion 2020) and A Season of Darkness (Berkley, 2010), are accounts of high-profile, cold-case murders in Nashville. Now Gobbell authors the Jordan Mayfair Mystery Series: Pursuit in Provence (Five Star, 2015), Secrets and Shamrocks (Five Star, 2016), and Treachery in Tuscany (Encircle, 2018), winner of Killer Nashville’s Silver Falchion Award for Best Cozy Mystery.
Gobbell received the Tennessee Arts Commission’s Individual Artist Award in Fiction. Other writing achievements include the Leslie Garrett Fiction Prize awarded by the Knoxville Writers Guild, Tennessee Writers Alliance Short Story First Place Award, and the North Carolina Writers’ Workshop First Place Award in Creative Nonfiction. She received a Pushcart nomination for her story, “Primates,” which was published in Bellevue Literary Review. She won the Creative Nonfiction First Place Award from the Knoxville Writers’ Guild for her essay, “In the Car with Mother on Christmas Eve.” Twice she has received the Leslie Garrett Award for Fiction.
An active participant in the writing community, Gobbell helped organize the Tennessee Writers Alliance in 1990 and served on its Board of Directors for ten years, including two terms as president and one as chair of the Board. She was also a founding member of a writers group that still meets every Tuesday night, the Nashville Writers Alliance.
For twenty years, Phyllis Gobbell served on the English faculty at Nashville State Community College as Associate Professor. She taught courses in composition, creative writing, and literature. She served as editor of the literary magazine, Tetrahedra, for eight years.
Gobbell earned her B.S. in Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and received her M.A. in English from Austin Peay State University, Clarksville, Tennessee, where the graduate program offered a creative thesis option. Episode 508 - A X Foster - GAVEL TO GAVEL and DOUBLE BLIND - THE SENECA COUNTY COURTHOUSE SERIES A. X. Foster was a prosecutor in Maryland for 20 years and then opened up his own law firm where he represented criminal defendants for an additional 15 years. As a prosecutor, he tried approximately 100 jury trials, including homicides, sexual assaults, domestic violence and animal cruelty cases. His work promoting increased protection for animals led to the legislature enacting the first felony animal abuse law in Maryland history. He also won the first conviction under the new law in 2000. Foster graduated from Bennington College in Vermont with a double major in Literature and Theatre Arts. He then spent two years as a copywriter at the Madison Avenue advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather. Foster then traveled in Europe while based in Amsterdam, where he performed for two years at the English Speaking Theatre of Amsterdam. After returning to New York, he became a member of the acting unions Actors’ Equity, the Screen Actors’ Guild, and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. In the 1980s, Foster performed in various TV soap operas, including “Ryan’s Hope,” “Search For Tomorrow,” “The Guiding Light,” “Another World,” and “As The World Turns.” Disenchanted with the world of professional acting, Foster entered law school to become an entertainment lawyer, but took a different path once he studied criminal law. At Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, Foster won the school-wide Moot Court tournament and also received the prize for best legal writing, the Best Brief Award, and the prize for best speaker, the Best Oralist Award. He was then named to represent Emory in the National Moot Court tournament where he competed against other law schools from across the country. Upon graduation from law school, Foster first worked for the Department of Justice in Wilmington, Delaware and then took a position as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Maryland. GAVEL TO GAVEL, Foster’s first legal thriller, is based on Foster’s experiences as a prosecutor. A life-long fan of murder mysteries and legal thrillers, with Agatha Christie, John Grisham and James Patterson as influences, Foster began writing the novel in 2020, when COVID greatly curtailed activity in the local courthouse. In GAVEL TO GAVEL, a wealthy businessman is murdered by his wife. The only eyewitness is their nine-year-old disabled daughter. Her testimony is the key to the case. Episode 507 - Richard Sparks - Richard Returns to Share His Next Project, to celebrate news about The Schoolmaster skit and Rowan Atkinson's creative license Richard Sparks One morning in 1979 I got a call from an understandably excited Rowan Atkinson. “John Cleese just called. He’s asked me to be in his new charity show – and can I do The Schoolmaster?” Er, yes. I’d written The Schoolmaster for Rowan the previous year, for a revue at the Hampstead Theatre (Rowan with Elspeth Walker and Peter Wilson). John and his co-producer, Martin Lewis, had seen it; and a year later, Rowan and I were backstage at Her Majesty’s Theatre, meeting John and other members of the cast of The Secret Policeman’s Ball. Rowan went on stage an unknown, with his gown and clipboard and pen, and came off a star. The Schoolmaster became his signature piece, the encore of his live shows. Eventually, he got tired of doing the same old routine and wrote another (ruder) version, generously giving me half the royalties. By that time, I’d cut my teeth on various TV shows, from HTV (Wales) to ITV (Southern and Central) to the BBC. I’d also written some stage shows (reviews, original plays, and adaptations of Goldoni comedies), and done a lot of freelance script editing. In 1992, I was hired by Columbia Picture Television to work with Blake Hunter and Marty Cohan, the creators of Who’s the Boss?. My wife and I moved with our young daughter to her parents (converted) garage and we’ve lived in Los Angeles since. I’ve written a number of libretti for operas, almost all for the LA Opera – some original pieces, some translations from German or Italian. My writing partner, the composer, Lee Holdridge, was – in a way – once G.R.R. Martin’s ‘writing partner’ in that he composed the scores for the TV series Beauty and the Beast, for which Martin was a script writer. I’d been a hard-core RPG gamer for years when the idea for these books just fell out of the sky one morning, and I started writing. I have hardly had a moment to log on to any game — I’m too busy exploring the New Rock stories as they unfold. My publisher, Caezik SF & Fantasy, is a company of enthusiasts who love these genres. I am delighted to join their family of authors, and to be working with their executive editor, Lezli, Robyn. Three sequels – New Rock New Realm, New Rock New Rules, and New Rock New Roads, have been completed and will be published in due course. I have even been known to take one to a major league baseball game, which put a big frown on my husband’s face. One day as I was reading a book, I thought to myself, “I can do this. I can write a book.” Little did I know then how challenging it is to write a novel. But the thought put a seed in my mind and soon after that, I began writing. However, life got in the way and I put the writing aside for many years. When I retired in 2019, I pulled out the old manuscripts and began revising them. In March 2021, I self-published “Seventy Times Seven” with Friesen Press. In 2022, “Hope Doesn’t Disappoint”, the first book of the 3-book Victory Series was published traditionally by Elk Lake Publishing, Inc., a small Christian company in Plymouth, MA. The second book in the series, “Abundance of Grace” came out in June 2023. The third, “Caused to Triumph”, is to be published sometime in 2024. During the over thirty years I worked in the social services field, I met people of diverse cultures, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds, and beliefs. Their personalities and stories have become a melting pot in my brain and from that concoction come the characters and plots for my books.
