In 2 Samuel 3:9-21, we witness an intricate political situation unfolding between Abner, the commander of Saul's army, and David, who is emerging as the new king of Israel. Abner had switched allegiance from Saul's house to David's, offering to bring the rest of Israel under David's rule. However, David insisted on one condition: to return his first wife, Michal, whom Saul had given to another man. Abner agreed but eventually changed his mind, prompting David to send messengers to retrieve Michal forcibly.
This passage reveals the danger of taking matters into our own hands, especially when it comes to matters that concern God's will or work. Here's how we can interpret this situation in light of the theme of not doing God's work for Him:
- Human manipulation vs. God's sovereignty: Abner's attempt to unite Israel under David's rule might have seemed like a noble act, but it involved manipulating political situations to achieve his ends. Instead of trusting in God's timing and sovereignty, Abner sought to expedite the process through his own schemes.
