When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Is The Kohberger Defense Trying To Persuade Possible Jurors With Baseless Claims?
How does a criminology PhD student allegedly go from studying crime to being the center of one? Bryan Kohberger, accused in the tragic Idaho student murders, may have thought he had every detail planned—until the knife sheath said otherwise. Is this a case of overconfidence meeting modern forensics?
In this episode, Tony Brueski and retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke dissect the alleged missteps, from touch DNA on a knife sheath to cell phone data that paints an incriminating picture. As defense attorneys try to sow doubt with conflicting expert interpretations, the real battle emerges: simplifying complex science for a jury that holds someone's fate in their hands. Was Kohberger's alleged planning undone by his own hubris, or is there more to the story than we've seen?
What else is hidden beneath the surface, waiting to come to light?

×The Real Reason the Menendez Brothers Killed | FBI Insider Speaks Out Did Lyle and Eric Menendez brutally murder their parents out of sheer greed, or was there a much darker, more twisted reason behind their actions? For decades, their story has morphed—from a mafia hit to self-defense against years of horrific abuse. But how many times can the truth change before it stops being the truth? In this episode, retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer breaks down the psychological and evidentiary inconsistencies of the Menendez brothers' defense. She and Tony Brueski dig into the evolving narratives, the alleged abuse claims, and the convenient timing of new "evidence" that always seems to emerge when cameras are rolling. From gruesome crime scene tactics designed to mislead investigators to the sudden appearance of a decades-old letter, the case is as complicated as ever. With new legal battles brewing and the possibility of intervention from California’s highest levels of power, could the Menendez brothers finally get another shot at freedom? Or is this just another chapter in their long-running play for sympathy? #MenendezBrothers #TrueCrime #HiddenKillers #PsychologicalManipulation #JenniferCoffindaffer #CrimeAnalysis #MurderMystery Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Imagine a courtroom where secrecy becomes the rule rather than the exception. That's precisely what’s happening in the case of Bryan Kohberger, the man accused of the November 2022 stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students. Recently, 4th District Judge Steven Hippler made it clear he’s had enough of the excessive number of sealed documents being filed by both the defense and prosecution. He emphasized that this level of secrecy contradicts the public’s First Amendment right to know what’s happening in their courts. His order? Attorneys must take the least restrictive approach necessary—redact a few lines, use initials if needed, but stop sealing everything. Kohberger is charged with four counts of murder for the deaths of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves. The four students were brutally killed in the early morning hours of November 13, 2022, at a rental home near their campus in Moscow, Idaho. When asked to enter a plea last year, Kohberger stood silent, prompting the judge to enter a not-guilty plea on his behalf. Prosecutors have already announced their intent to seek the death penalty if he is convicted. As the trial approaches, a wave of legal motions has been filed—many of them under seal. One key motion from the defense argues that the death penalty should be taken off the table, citing Kohberger’s autism spectrum disorder. The argument? That executing someone with such a condition could constitute cruel and unusual punishment. Other sealed motions tackle issues such as whether the prosecution can use terms like “psychopath” or “sociopath” in court, as well as the presence of immediate family members during the proceedings. Judge Hippler has ruled that while some of these documents will remain sealed, others will be redacted and made public to strike a balance between transparency and confidentiality. The trial is set to begin on August 11, 2025, and is expected to last more than three months. Given the intense media scrutiny, selecting an impartial jury will be a major challenge. Judge Hippler’s push for a more open court process is an effort to maintain public trust while ensuring a fair trial for all parties involved. As the legal battle unfolds, the families of the victims and the wider community remain hopeful that justice will be served. The court’s approach to balancing transparency with due process will be key in determining how this case moves forward. #IdahoStudentMurders #BryanKohberger #LegalTransparency #JusticeForTheFour Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? 1 Karen Read’s Legal Battle Double Jeopardy, Coverups, and a Federal Investigation in Question 20:55
A federal court heard arguments from Karen Read's defense team in a critical hearing Wednesday, as they pushed to dismiss two of the charges against her, citing double jeopardy. This was one of two hearings scheduled that day, and it could determine whether Read faces another trial for the 2022 death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe. Read, 44, of Mansfield, is accused of striking O’Keefe with her SUV outside a home in Canton on January 29, 2022, then allegedly leaving him in a snowstorm after a night of drinking. The defense, however, has long maintained that she is the victim of a coverup and that O’Keefe’s death was caused by others—potentially even law enforcement officers. For over 90 minutes, Chief Judge Dennis Saylor listened to arguments dissecting whether Judge Beverly Cannone properly declared a mistrial and whether she should have polled the jury before doing so. Read’s attorneys claim they spoke to jurors after the trial, and those jurors confirmed they had reached a unanimous verdict: not guilty of second-degree murder, not guilty of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. If that’s the case, the defense argues, retrying Read would be a blatant violation of her constitutional protection against double jeopardy. Defense attorney Martin Weinberg made the case clear: “We had a lengthy argument in front of the chief judge of the United States District Court on issues of profound constitutional significance. The question is whether or not the Norfolk District Attorney can reprosecute Ms. Read when there’s such strong and compelling evidence that the prior jury acquitted her.” But the prosecution wasn’t having it. Caleb Schillinger, representing the DA’s office, countered that the jury never filled out verdict slips or sent any notes to Cannone indicating they had reached a partial verdict. His argument was simple: “There were no acquittals.” He pointed out that if the roles were reversed and the prosecution tried to argue the jury had found her guilty, Read’s team would have objected just as strongly. Judge Saylor acknowledged the weight of the issue and promised to issue his opinion quickly, knowing that whoever loses will appeal. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking—the retrial is scheduled to begin on April 1. This federal hearing came hot on the heels of another major development. Just the day before, during a hearing in state court, Special Prosecutor Hank Brennan made a statement that raised eyebrows: The federal investigation into O’Keefe’s death was officially closed. But outside the courtroom, Karen Read wasn’t so sure. Speaking to reporters, she questioned whether the probe was actually over, referencing a letter from the U.S. Attorney’s Office she received just a month earlier. “If I take him at his word, that would be a very dangerous endeavor of mine,” she said. “But I’ve seen a letter from the U.S. Attorney’s Office from one month ago, and it said it was ongoing. It was a four-page, single-spaced letter.” The conflicting statements only add to the controversy surrounding the case, fueling speculation about the integrity of the investigation. If the probe was still active just weeks ago, what changed? And why the sudden declaration that it’s over? Read’s legal team isn’t slowing down. They were right back in Norfolk Superior Court later that same day, continuing to fight through pretrial motions. Whether or not she faces trial again, one thing is certain—this case is far from over. #KarenRead #JohnOKeefe #TrueCrime #LegalDrama Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? 1 Breaking Down The Beliefs of Chad & Lori Vallow Daybell Part 2 The Doom & Gloom CORE TENETS OF THEIR RELIGION 33:05
Breaking Down The Beliefs of Chad & Lori Vallow Daybell Part 2 The Doom & Gloom CORE TENETS OF THEIR RELIGION Once Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow believed they were chosen by God , their doctrine evolved into a radical, self-serving theology that justified their crimes . In this episode, we break down the specific tenets of their belief system , from Chad’s doomsday timelines predicting the world would end in July 2020 to the twisted reincarnation doctrine known as “multiple mortal probations.” Their obsession with end-times prophecy was fueled by LDS tent-city survivalist movements , where members believed they would be called to gather in safe zones before the world collapsed . But Chad and Lori took it further, convincing themselves that some souls were no longer human at all . Through their bizarre “light vs. dark” ranking system , they determined who was “worthy” to move forward—and who had become a zombie that needed to be eliminated. We also explore their belief in divine powers , including Lori’s claim that she was immortal and Chad’s so-called spiritual portal . These doctrines weren’t just harmless religious speculation —they were the foundation of a doomsday cult that led to multiple murders . How did Chad and Lori justify their actions as part of their divine mission? And what happens when a prophecy fails but the believers refuse to accept it? Louisiana “Only Fans” Mom Only Gets 8 Years For Letting Her 2 Year Old Die Meth Overdose Alright, let’s really break this one down because it’s a case that’ll make your blood boil. A Louisiana mother, 24-year-old Summer Buxton, just got sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the overdose death of her 2-year-old son, Keynan Jay Buxton. And while eight years might sound like a decent chunk of time, her family is not having it. They were expecting something much harsher—like 20 years—and they’re making it very clear that they think justice was barely served. So, what exactly happened? Back on May 30, 2023, authorities found little Keynan unresponsive in a motel room. Now, kids get into things all the time, but when the toxicology report came back, it painted a truly horrifying picture. This toddler had meth, fentanyl, and acetyl fentanyl in his system. That’s not just an accidental exposure—that’s a fatal amount of drugs for a fully grown adult, let alone a baby who probably still needed help getting his shoes on the right feet. During the sentencing, Buxton’s sister, who goes by Lyons, didn’t hold back. She gave an emotional and furious victim impact statement, calling for the maximum penalty. In her eyes, Summer showed zero remorse—not a shred of guilt, not a moment of reflection. Instead, according to Lyons, Summer was more focused on keeping her OnlyFans account running than mourning the loss of her son. And just when you think it couldn’t get any more absurd, Lyons also claimed that Summer was bragging about her “sugar daddy” footing the bill for her legal defense. Imagine being in that situation—your child is gone, your family is shattered, and instead of taking accountability, you’re flexing about who’s paying your lawyer fees. Buxton’s mother, Tammie Abshire, echoed the outrage. She said the family fully expected a 20-year sentence, not a measly eight. And then Lyons dropped a brutal comparison: “How do you give someone eight years for the death of her child… but you can get ten years for animal abuse?” And honestly, she’s got a point. In some states, if you so much as harm a police dog, you’re looking at more time behind bars than Summer got for what happened to her son. Let that sink in. Now, Buxton’s defense team tried their best to spin the narrative. Their argument? This was all a tragic accident, and Summer was suffering from a severe drug addiction that completely clouded her judgment. They claimed she wasn’t in her right mind, that manslaughter was too harsh, and that the charge should’ve been negligent homicide instead. But the DA wasn’t buying it. They refused to lower the charge, but in the end, they still cut a deal that her attorneys called “fair and reasonable.” Meanwhile, let’s not forget about Keynan’s father, Adrian Higgins. He was arrested too and ended up with a 10-year sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter. So, if you’re keeping score—Mom got eight years, Dad got ten. And yet, the child is still gone, and the family is left wondering if justice was really served. And just when you think the story is over, there’s more. Buxton was actually arrested again in January 2024 at a motel in Mississippi (because apparently, motels are a recurring theme in her life). And if that wasn’t enough, another woman connected to this case was arrested too—her court date is coming up on March 3. Who she is and what exactly her role was is still unclear, but it seems like this tangled mess of a case isn’t done unraveling just yet. So, what do we take away from this? At the heart of it, this is an absolute tragedy. A 2-year-old lost his life in a situation that never should have happened. A child that young doesn’t just stumble upon fentanyl and meth on his own—he had to be in an environment where that was accessible . And that’s what makes this so enraging. Some people will argue that eight years is enough—after all, Summer was an addict, and addiction is a disease. But then you have the other side, the people who see this as a complete failure of justice. They see a mother who should have been protecting her child but instead put him in an environment where he didn’t stand a chance. And now, she’ll serve a sentence that, realistically, could be cut even shorter with good behavior. At the end of the day, no amount of prison time is bringing Keynan back. But the question that lingers is: Did the punishment fit the crime? Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Could Kevin Franke have stopped the nightmare unfolding under his own roof, or was he just another victim caught in Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt’s web of control? That’s the big question as we dig into the twisted dynamics of this case. Sure, he wasn’t the one tying up his children or starving them, but he also wasn’t stepping in when things spiraled into a full-blown horror show. Retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke joins us to break down the psychology of willful blindness, groupthink, and how belief systems can be weaponized. Was Kevin truly unaware of what was happening, or was he just too deep in the cult-like mindset to act? And more importantly, should that excuse him from responsibility? #TrueCrime #KevinFranke #RubyFranke #JodiHildebrandt #CrimeAnalysis #HiddenKillers #PsychologyOfCrime Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Did Donna Adelson really think she could charm her way out of this one? The 75-year-old grandmother took the stand, painting herself as a frail victim trapped in a jail full of violent criminals—completely ignoring the part where she allegedly plotted an escape to Vietnam, a country with no U.S. extradition. Oops. The prosecution, however, had a slightly different take, armed with jailhouse calls and enough red flags to decorate a parade. So, what went so horribly wrong for Donna in court? Defense Attorney Bob Motta joins the discussion, breaking down her baffling decision to testify at her own bond hearing, the eye-rolling complaints about her jail conditions, and the ticking time bomb of her family's crumbling defense. In this explosive deep dive into the Bryan Kohberger case, we unravel the latest legal twists that could change everything. His defense team has now introduced an autism spectrum disorder argument, claiming it should exempt him from the death penalty. But will this strategy hold up in court? We break down the legal implications, expert opinions, and whether this move is a groundbreaking legal defense or a last-ditch effort to spare his life. Meanwhile, Judge Steven Hippler has finally had enough of the secrecy surrounding this case, slamming both the defense and prosecution for excessive sealed filings. With new court orders prioritizing transparency, we explore what this means for the public, the jury pool, and the integrity of the trial itself. What was hidden in these filings, and why did the judge say "enough is enough"? And finally, the courtroom battles rage on over what the jury will actually hear. The defense wants to ban terms like "psychopath" and "sociopath," while prosecutors fight to bring up a 2014 incident from Kohberger’s past. Plus, the ongoing fight over the presence of victims’ families in the courtroom and accusations that the prosecution is withholding evidence. This case is shaping up to be one of the most intense legal showdowns in recent history—don’t miss this critical update. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Will Kohberger's Alleged Autism Spectrum Disorder Save Him From A Death Sentence? What happens when the strongest defense strategy isn’t proving innocence, but making the jury question everything they thought they knew? Bryan Kohberger’s legal team is running out of moves, and now, they’re playing a psychological game—one that’s less about evidence and more about creating doubt. With all motions denied, they have no choice but to humanize Kohberger, challenge forensic science, and maybe even throw autism spectrum disorder into the mix as a mitigating factor. But is this a strategic move or a desperate gamble? And more importantly—will the jury buy it? #TrueCrime #BryanKohberger #HiddenKillers #PsychologyOfCrime #CriminalDefense #ForensicScience #LegalStrategy Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Can an Autism Defense Keep Bryan Kohberger Off Death Row? A Legal Breakdown Could claiming autism spectrum disorder really be a life-or-death strategy? Bryan Kohberger's defense team is throwing a curveball, suggesting that ASD should factor into whether he faces the death penalty. But here’s the problem—autism isn’t a get-out-of-execution-free card. In fact, this argument could backfire spectacularly. Former prosecutor Eric Faddis joins to break down the legal implications. Will the jury see this as a legitimate mitigation factor, or will it only reinforce their suspicions? And if the defense is leaning into this strategy, does that mean they’re running out of other options? More importantly, if he didn’t do it… why would this even matter? #BryanKohberger #IdahoMurders #TrueCrime #DeathPenalty #AutismDefense #LegalStrategy #CrimeAnalysis Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Did Karen Read And Her Defense Get 'Too Close', Ret FBI Jennifer Coffindaffer Wonders Is Karen Read’s defense team in hot water, or is this just another courtroom circus act? The latest hearing didn’t just put the spotlight on evidence—it exposed a legal brawl over ethics, credibility, and potential misconduct. The prosecution is claiming Read’s defense team played fast and loose with financial ties to expert witnesses, possibly influencing testimony. But is this a legitimate concern or just an attempt to shake the case? Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer dives into the tangled web of legal maneuvering, pointing to signed agreements, financial records, and trial transcripts that might just tell a different story. From surprise courtroom tactics to eyebrow-raising funding sources, this case is turning into a masterclass on what NOT to do in high-profile litigation. And let’s not forget the burning question: If this defense team is as seasoned and reputable as they claim, why would they risk getting caught in a mess like this? Lori Vallow Daybell says she will be exonerated. Not maybe. Not possibly. She is certain. And she’s saying this from behind bars, awaiting trial for the murder of her fourth husband, while her current husband sits on death row. If there’s one thing Lori has always had, it’s confidence—whether it’s in her bizarre religious beliefs, her devotion to Chad Daybell, or her ability to deny reality even when it's staring her in the face. This week, she sat down with NBC’s Keith Morrison for what’s being described as an “extensive and often combative” interview. And if there’s anyone who can handle combative, it’s Keith Morrison. The full special is set to air on 'Dateline,' where Lori, dressed in an orange jumpsuit and purple handcuffs, tells the world exactly what she wants them to believe. She’s going to be exonerated. Not only that—she’s seen the future, and in that future, she and Chad are free. She claims Jesus himself showed her this vision when she was in heaven. Now, most people who claim to see heaven aren’t sitting in a jail cell convicted of murdering their own children, but then again, Lori has never been like most people. Lori was sentenced to life in prison in 2023 for the murders of her two youngest children, 7-year-old JJ Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan, as well as for the murder of Chad Daybell’s first wife, Tammy Daybell. The details of those crimes were horrifying—JJ and Tylee’s bodies were found buried on Chad’s Idaho property, their remains showing the unthinkable levels of brutality they endured. Tammy’s death, originally ruled natural, was later determined to be a homicide. Chad was convicted of the same crimes. His fate, however, was different. In 2024, he was sentenced to death. The man Lori still refers to as her eternal husband is now waiting for his execution date while she sits in an Arizona jail, awaiting trial for yet another murder—that of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow. Charles had long suspected Lori’s descent into religious extremism was dangerous. He tried to get help, to warn people. Then one day, in July 2019, he was shot dead by Lori’s brother, Alex Cox, who conveniently died later that same year, taking any potential confessions with him. Lori, undeterred by any of this, is still talking. In the upcoming 'Dateline' special, she’s not just giving her side—she’s doubling down. It’s not a confession, and it’s certainly not remorse. It’s Lori being Lori. Believing that no matter what happens, she’s special. She’s chosen. The rules don’t apply to her. The special also features interviews with key figures in the case, including Rexburg police detective Ray Hermosillo, Madison County Sheriff Ron Ball, Madison County prosecutor Rob Wood, retired FBI agent Douglas Hart, and journalist Nate Eaton, who has covered the case from the beginning. But the voice that carries the most weight belongs to Lori’s eldest son, Colby Ryan. Colby, the only surviving child of Lori’s, has watched as the mother he once knew disappeared into a twisted world of doomsday prophecies and murder. And in his interview, he doesn’t hold back. He describes how the way his sister was treated, even after her death, was so depraved it changed the way he sees people altogether. And he’s right—because what happened to Tylee wasn’t just a murder. It was something that defies humanity. This will be the seventh 'Dateline' episode dedicated to Lori and Chad, and if history is any indication, it won’t be the last. The fascination with this case isn’t just about crime—it’s about belief. About how two people could convince themselves they were on some divine mission while leaving behind a trail of destruction. For those who still can’t wrap their heads around how any of this happened, 'Dateline' might provide some answers—or at least another look into the mind of a woman who remains convinced she’s destined for something greater than a prison cell. 'Law of the land' says she’s guilty. 'Law of Lori' says she’s getting out. #LoriVallowDaybell #Dateline #TrueCrime #ChadDaybell Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? The unforeseen deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, shocked the world when their bodies were discovered in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on February 26, 2025. Authorities responded to a welfare check requested by a maintenance worker who hadn’t heard from the couple in weeks. Upon arrival, law enforcement found Hackman in the mudroom near his cane, as if he had fallen. Arakawa was located in the bathroom near a space heater, with an open prescription bottle and scattered pills on the countertop. One of their dogs was found deceased in a crate close to Arakawa, while two other dogs were found alive in different areas of the house. Friends and neighbors had noticed a decline in Hackman’s health in the months leading up to his death. Once known for riding his bike around the neighborhood, he had become increasingly reclusive. At 95, his frailty had become apparent, and Arakawa, a 65-year-old classical pianist, had also retreated from public life. Authorities classified the deaths as "suspicious" due to the circumstances, but foul play was not suspected. Initial autopsy reports revealed no external trauma, and tests ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning. Data from Hackman’s pacemaker suggested his heart had stopped on February 17, meaning they had been dead for about nine days before being found. Speculation surrounded the case, with some questioning whether it could have been a "companion suicide," but experts doubted this, given that the couple was found in separate parts of the house. The presence of prescription medication near Arakawa and Hackman’s known heart condition led investigators to consider a medical event as the likely cause. The entertainment world responded with an outpouring of grief. John Travolta shared stories of Hackman’s humor and brilliance on the set of Get Shorty , while Morgan Freeman honored him at the 2025 Oscars, calling him one of the most generous performers he’d ever worked with. Hackman’s career spanned over four decades, earning him two Academy Awards for The French Connection and Unforgiven . His work in Bonnie and Clyde , The Conversation , and The Royal Tenenbaums cemented his status as one of Hollywood’s most revered actors. Though he retired from acting in 2004, he remained active in writing and personal pursuits. The investigation into the exact circumstances of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa’s deaths continues. Their passing leaves behind a legacy of artistic contributions and a community mourning the loss of two lives lived largely outside the Hollywood spotlight. #GeneHackman #BetsyArakawa #HollywoodLegend #UnsolvedMystery Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? 'They Paid It' Bob Motta Reacts To Karen Reads Defense's Claim of 'Surprise' Bill From ARCCA How does a routine court hearing turn into a full-blown legal circus? Welcome to the latest chapter in the Karen Read case, where a simple motion hearing spiraled into a tangled web of accusations, potential sanctions, and even the possible removal of her lead attorney. The courtroom drama reached new heights as Judge Beverly Cannone delayed her ruling, hinting at serious consequences for Read’s defense team—ranging from financial disclosure failures to allegedly scripting witness testimony. Defense Attorney Bob Motta joins the discussion, breaking down what this could mean for Read’s case. Could her team be in real trouble, or is this just another strategic play? If lead counsel Alan Jackson gets booted, does the defense hit the reset button, or will he fight tooth and nail to stay on? And let’s not forget the disciplinary committees watching from the sidelines—if Jackson gets the axe, could he be facing career-damaging repercussions? With so much at stake, one thing is clear—this case is far from a smooth ride. But the big question remains: is the judge about to drop the hammer, or is this just another dramatic twist in an already chaotic trial? #KarenRead #AlanJackson #TrueCrime #LegalDrama #DefenseDiaries #HiddenKillers #CourtroomChaos Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Richard Allen’s Defense Strikes Back The Evidence the Prosecution Rejected The Delphi murders case took a shocking turn when inmate Ricci Davis claimed that Ron Logan, the original person of interest, confessed to the crime while behind bars. But rather than investigate the claims, the prosecution dismissed them outright—calling Davis an unreliable jailhouse informant and pointing to his failed polygraph test as proof that his story couldn’t be trusted. But was this a fair assessment, or was the state more concerned about protecting their conviction of Richard Allen than uncovering the full truth? In this episode, we break down the prosecution’s response to the Ricci Davis letters, analyzing their reasoning, their outright refusal to follow up on his claims, and whether they may have intentionally ignored evidence that didn’t fit their version of events. Why were Logan’s inconsistencies dismissed despite his past deception? Why was Kegan Kline’s possible involvement never fully explored? And most importantly, if Allen was the real killer, why did these new allegations send prosecutors into defense mode? Join us as we unpack the legal, ethical, and investigative implications of the state’s handling of these letters. Was this just a weak lead that deserved to be tossed aside, or could this have been the key to uncovering what really happened to Abby and Libby? And if the prosecution was so certain that Davis was lying—why does their response feel more like damage control than due diligence? Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Breaking Down The Beliefs of Chad & Lori Vallow Daybell Part 1 How It Started ORIGINS & BELIEF DEVELOPMENT The story of Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow didn’t start with murder—it started with faith twisted into fanaticism. In this episode, we explore the LDS Church’s core beliefs, how mainstream Mormonism views prophecy and the Second Coming, and how Chad and Lori veered from religious devotion into dangerous extremism. Chad’s near-death experiences convinced him he had access to divine knowledge, while Lori’s obsession with end-times prophecy led her to believe she was a goddess chosen to gather the righteous. How did a simple belief in personal revelation and spiritual preparedness turn into an apocalyptic worldview that justified murder? We break down Chad’s early writings, his rise in LDS prepping circles, and how fiction became fact in his mind. We also examine Lori’s transformation from a devoted Mormon mother to a self-proclaimed leader of the 144,000. By tracking their path from faith to fanaticism, we expose the psychological and religious factors that led them to classify people as “light” or “dark,” ultimately determining who lived and who died. Through expert analysis and firsthand accounts, this episode lays the groundwork for understanding how a dangerous cult ideology took root within the framework of a mainstream religion. How did their beliefs develop? What warning signs were ignored? And could this have been stopped before it spiraled into murder? Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Why Weren’t the Laundries Charged In Gabby Petito Case? The Legal Loopholes Explained Did the Laundries know more than they let on? While the public has already convicted Chris and Roberta Laundrie in the "Court of Common Sense," the real question is—did they actually break the law? We’re diving into the legal mess surrounding the Laundries’ silence, their baffling behavior during the search for Gabby, and the sudden discovery of Brian’s remains. Former prosecutor and defense attorney Eric Faddis joins to break down what’s morally repugnant versus what’s actually criminal. Could law enforcement have legally forced Brian out of that house? Did they botch their chance to stop this tragedy before it spiraled? And why does it feel like the justice system failed Gabby at every turn? Before Ruby Franke, the infamous YouTube mom behind the "8Passengers" channel, pleaded guilty to child abuse charges, authorities uncovered something chilling—a handwritten journal detailing the suffering she inflicted on her own children. In it, she described acts of cruelty with a detachment that made even seasoned investigators pause. As revealed in Hulu’s new docuseries Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke , a police investigator reads from the journal, bringing Franke’s own words into the open. One entry is particularly disturbing: "Sleep outside, shaved her head, doused her with water, over his nose and mouth, head in the toilet, needs to be painful. Blood on his face, scream and scream." Another entry is no less horrifying: "I told the boy, he emulates a snake. If he wants to emulate the Savior, he needs to be a hundred percent obedient with exactness. The body must engage in good work and the good works need to be painful. I have the power of God and he must obey." The extent of the abuse detailed in these pages is staggering. In one passage, Franke wrote about forcing her son into the sun, then returning with a "cactus poker" to prod him. She recorded her own twisted logic: "When I poke his back to get in the sun, he doesn’t even flinch. I told him, give your demon friend a message for me. I will not rest. I will not stop. I will not leave. I will fight him until the day you die." These weren’t the ramblings of someone suffering a temporary lapse in judgment. They were calculated. Premeditated. Written down as if she was keeping a ledger of pain. In August 2023, it all came to an end when Franke’s 12-year-old son escaped from the home she shared with her business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt. Starving, injured, and desperate, he ran to a neighbor and pleaded for help. The neighbor, moved to tears by the boy’s skeletal appearance, called 911. Soon after, authorities discovered his 9-year-old sister inside Hildebrandt’s home in an equally horrific condition. Franke and her husband, Kevin, had gained a massive following through "8Passengers," where their brand of strict, authoritarian parenting was often defended as tough love. Their content, which amassed over 2 million subscribers, frequently walked the fine line between discipline and outright cruelty. YouTube ultimately shut down the channel after Franke’s arrest. Kevin Franke was not charged in connection with the abuse. Jodi Hildebrandt, Franke’s business partner and a former therapist, only made things worse. The founder of the so-called "ConneXions" program, a religious-based self-help movement, Hildebrandt reportedly encouraged extreme parenting methods, preying on vulnerabilities within the Mormon community. According to a therapist featured in the docuseries, Hildebrandt "was excellent at exploiting Mormon anxiety." Her influence, combined with Franke’s already dangerous beliefs, created a toxic and violent environment for the children trapped in their care. Both Franke and Hildebrandt pleaded guilty to four counts of aggravated child abuse. Their sentences—ranging from four to 30 years—will be decided by the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole. At her sentencing, Franke broke down in tears, addressing her children directly. "I will never stop crying for hurting your tender souls," she said. But the damage was already done. The case against Karen Read has taken yet another dramatic turn, and if you thought this legal rollercoaster was slowing down, think again. This week, Read's defense team filed a motion to dismiss all charges, citing "extraordinary governmental misconduct." That’s not just a legal jab—it’s a full-on haymaker, accusing prosecutors of withholding evidence, tampering with the jury, and even altering key video footage that could prove Read’s innocence. For those just tuning in, Karen Read stands accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe, by allegedly running him over with her SUV on a snowy night in January 2022. The prosecution’s story? Read was drunk, angry, and intentionally struck O’Keefe, then left the scene. The defense’s story? Read is being framed, and the evidence against her has been manipulated to fit a narrative that conveniently ignores other possible explanations for O’Keefe’s death. Her first trial, which kicked off in April 2024, was a chaotic spectacle featuring more than 65 prosecution witnesses, a much shorter defense witness list, and ultimately—no verdict. After days of deadlock, the jury just couldn’t agree, and Judge Beverly Cannone declared a mistrial in July. Now, with a retrial scheduled for April 1, Read’s attorneys are coming out swinging, arguing that the whole case should be thrown out before it even starts. So, what’s the big bombshell this time? According to the defense, prosecutors withheld crucial surveillance footage that could exonerate Read. Specifically, a clip from the Canton Police Station’s sallyport—a secured garage area—shows someone approaching the taillight of Read’s SUV on the day she was arrested. If that doesn’t set off alarm bells, consider this: the defense didn’t get their hands on that footage until January 2025, nearly three years after the incident and after an entire trial had already played out. Why does that matter? Well, Read’s defense has long argued that her tail light was tampered with and that shattered pieces were planted near O’Keefe’s body to make it look like she hit him. If there’s footage showing someone messing with her car at the police station, that theory suddenly holds a lot more weight. The motion to dismiss calls this “a mockery of Ms. Read’s right to due process.” And honestly, it’s hard to argue with that phrasing. But the missing footage doesn’t stop there. The defense claims that there’s a full 42-minute gap in the sallyport surveillance video from when Read’s SUV first arrived. If that missing footage were to show the taillight intact before it mysteriously turned up shattered at the crime scene, it would blow a hole right through the prosecution’s case. The defense is now demanding a copy of the original video, complete with metadata, so experts can determine whether it was altered or selectively edited. The prosecution, of course, is pushing back. They deny any ethical violations or misconduct, let alone anything serious enough to dismiss the case entirely. They also argue that Read’s defense team is grasping at straws, trying to create doubt where there isn’t any. But considering the prosecution has already been caught withholding evidence, that’s a tough sell. And it doesn’t end there. The defense is also battling accusations that they secretly paid accident reconstruction experts from ARCCA for their opinions. Read’s attorneys insist that they never paid for testimony, only reimbursing travel expenses under guidance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The prosecution, meanwhile, has been trying to get those same experts banned from the retrial. If you’re wondering why, well—it's probably because their findings don’t exactly support the state’s theory. At this point, Read has already had multiple motions to dismiss denied, and she’s appealed those rulings all the way up to Massachusetts' highest court and even federal court. But this latest motion to dismiss is the most explosive yet, accusing prosecutors of bending the system to secure a conviction at any cost. Whether the judge agrees remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—this case is far from over. Next up, Read and her team are set to return to Norfolk Superior Court for motion hearings on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a pre-trial conference scheduled for Friday. Meanwhile, the case is also heading to federal appeals court this week, adding yet another layer of complexity to an already tangled legal battle. #KarenRead #JohnOKeefe #LegalBattle #CourtroomDrama #TrueCrime Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary

Alright, this one is straight out of a horror movie—but unfortunately, it's all too real. A 46-year-old Maryland woman, Candace Craig, will be spending the rest of her life in prison for brutally murdering and dismembering her own mother with a chainsaw. And as if that wasn’t twisted enough, she then tried to blame the whole thing on her own daughters . Even the prosecutors were left stunned. Assistant State’s Attorney Shauna Coleman, clearly at a loss for words, summed it up perfectly: “This happens in movies and books, not in real life.” But here we are. This nightmare unfolded on May 23, 2023, at the family’s home near Hyattsville, Maryland. And what was the alleged motive? A credit card dispute. Yeah, you read that right. A fight over money led Candace Craig to commit one of the most gruesome crimes in recent memory. After killing her 71-year-old mother, Margaret Craig, authorities say Candace took things to an unthinkable level—she chopped up her mother’s body. And she didn’t do it alone. Her 21-year-old daughter, Salia Hardy, was dragged into this mess too. According to prosecutors, the two of them tried burning Margaret’s remains on a grill —while also cooking chicken at the same time, apparently thinking the smell of BBQ would somehow cover up the stench of burning human flesh. Because nothing says “totally normal backyard cookout” like gasoline and human remains on the grill. Salia Hardy was later charged as an accessory after the fact. Her defense argued that she has learning disabilities, making her especially vulnerable to manipulation. She ended up taking a plea deal and later testified against her mother. When the case hit the courtroom, it was as disturbing as you’d expect. Judge Karen Mason didn’t mince words when she called Craig’s actions “something so unimaginable.” Then she handed down the ultimate punishment— life in prison without parole . And while the details of this case could make even the most seasoned crime reporter queasy, the prosecution didn’t want to focus on the horror. Instead, they tried to shift attention to Margaret Craig’s life rather than just the brutality of her death. “I would instead like to preserve the memory of Margaret Craig,” Coleman said, choosing to honor the victim rather than dwell on the carnage. One of the most damning pieces of evidence came from Salia Hardy herself. She testified that on the night of the murder, she heard her grandmother scream , but her mother brushed it off, saying something just fell in the basement . Oh, and then she casually warned her daughter not to go into grandma’s room . The next day, when Hardy was home alone, she made a horrifying discovery—her grandmother’s lifeless body, stuffed in a bin with a trash bag covering her head. And if that wasn’t disturbing enough, Candace Craig didn’t even try to justify what she had done. Instead, she told her daughter that they had to get rid of the DNA . The options she suggested? Acid, burning the body, or dismemberment. You know, just a casual brainstorming session about how to cover up matricide . Prosecutors laid out exactly how methodical Craig was. She went to Home Depot (because of course she did) and bought grilling supplies, including a can of gasoline . But her plan didn’t go smoothly. When they tried to burn Margaret Craig’s body on the grill, the fire got out of control, prompting neighbors to step in and help put it out. Firefighters were even called—yet somehow, no one discovered the body at that time. By the next morning, with the fire out and the remains "cooled off" (Hardy’s words, not mine), they brought Margaret Craig’s charred remains back inside the house. That’s when Candace allegedly took a chainsaw to what was left, dismembering her mother in the basement. When police eventually arrived for a welfare check on June 2—after a 911 caller reported they hadn’t heard from Margaret in days—they were hit with a smell that could only mean one thing. You guessed it— decomposition . Officers found blood and tissue on the floor. They found three white plastic trash bags . One of them? Contained what looked like brain matter . And sitting nearby? A knife and a chainsaw , both covered in human remains. During trial, Assistant Medical Examiner Dr. Pamela Ferreira revealed that investigators recovered 67 pieces of Margaret Craig’s remains. But here’s the unsettling part— some body parts were never found . The condition of what they did find showed clear signs of both burning and dismemberment with a mechanical saw . While it was clear she was murdered, the exact cause of death? Still undetermined. After sentencing Craig to life without parole, Judge Mason left her with some haunting words: "What we have here is a woman who led a good life and left this world in such a way. And only you know, Ms. Craig, exactly what happened here." And that’s the terrifying part. Only Candace Craig knows exactly what happened that night. So, what’s left? A daughter who will forever be haunted by what she was forced to witness. A mother whose life was taken in one of the most violent ways imaginable. And a community still struggling to understand how someone could do something so horrific—especially to their own family . There are brutal crimes, and then there’s this . And while Candace Craig will never see the outside of a prison cell again, the real question is: What kind of person does this to their own mother? Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
