Re-Air of Episode 148 from May 20th, 2022 // Danny Taing, Founder & CEO of Bokksu, shares his journey from academia, tech, and founding Bokksu, a direct-to-consumer snack subscription and e-grocer highlighting snacks from Japan and beyond. Learn more at bokksu.com and @bokksu everywhere. Meet Danny Danny Taing is the Founder & CEO of Bokksu, a New York and Tokyo-based D2C snack subscription and e-grocer that delivers authentic Japanese food and lifestyle products to over 100 countries. Providing Japan’s traditional makers with a platform to share their goods with a global audience, Bokksu is helping to support, preserve, and promote their craft, while making it easier for the rest of the world to discover, buy, and love authentic Japanese goods. The son of Cambodian-Chinese refugees, Danny was born in NYC and raised in NJ. He received a dual Bachelor's in Psychology and Communication, and a Master’s in Sociology, all from Stanford University. He then worked as a marketing strategist at Google HQ. After that, he relocated to Japan for a position at Rakuten. It was there, during the four years he spent living and working in Tokyo, that he developed his deep love of Japanese food and culture (as well as met his wonderful husband). Following Rakuten, Taing returned to New York to study Computer Science at Columbia University. Inspired by his passion for Japanese culture, Asian-American representation, and entrepreneurship, Taing founded Bokksu in 2015 with $5,000 of his own savings. Utilizing every skill and contact he had, Taing was able to go from concept to launch in just three months, without an additional penny of outside funding. And he sold through his first run of boxes in less than a week. Today, the company is valued at $100M and employs a staff of 50, 80% of whom are BIPOC, female, and/or LGBTQ+; a metric Taing is particularly proud of. In his spare time, Danny is an avid rock climber, fierce board game competitor, and, along with his husband, anime binge-watcher. Meet Bokksu Bokksu delivers authentic Japanese food and lifestyle products to customers around the world. Founded by Danny Taing in 2015, the New York and Tokyo-based D2C company partners with traditional makers throughout Japan to share their craft with over 100 countries via its snack subscription service, curated market of premium lifestyle goods, and online Asian grocery store. By providing Japan’s traditional makers with a platform to share their goods with a global audience, Bokksu is helping to support, preserve, and promote their craft, while making it easier for the rest of the world to discover, buy, and love authentic Japanese goods. Kal Penn , actor, author, and former White House staffer during the Obama Administration, joins Jerry to talk about a whole host of topics, including the paperback release of his book You Can’t Be Serious. Kal shares about his family’s story of becoming Asian American, battling imposter syndrome as an actor, and going from Hollywood to D.C. to work in the Obama Administration. Listen in as Jerry and Kal discuss who Kal’s book is for, the unexpected impact of Harold & Kumar, and what keeps him hopeful right now. Meet Kal Kal Penn has played leading roles in some of the world’s most-watched television shows, including How I Met Your Mother, 24, Designated Survivor, House, and more. He currently stars on the Disney Junior animated series Mira, Royal Detective. He was also the cocreator and star of the NBC/Universal comedy Sunnyside, and host, cocreator, and executive producer of a six-episode series in October 2020 for Disney’s Freeform Channel called Kal Penn Approves This Message, aimed at entertaining and informing young voters. On the big screen, Kal has starred in movies that have collectively grossed more than a billion dollars, including the Harold and Kumar franchise, National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, Superman Returns, The Namesake, and many other critically acclaimed blockbuster titles. He has also served as an adjunct lecturer in sociology and film studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and in sociology and political science at the University of California, Los Angeles. Kal has worked at the very highest levels of politics, as an Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, where he was President Obama’s Liaison to Young Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and the Arts communities in America. He was born and raised in New Jersey. About You Can't Be Serious! The star of the Harold and Kumar franchise, House, and Designated Survivor recounts why he rejected the advice of his aunties and guidance counselors and, instead of becoming a doctor or “something practical,” embarked on a surprising journey that has included confronting racism in Hollywood, meeting his future husband, and working in the Obama administration, in this “incredibly joyful and insightful” (Kiefer Sutherland) memoir. You Can’t Be Serious is a series of funny, consequential, awkward, and ridiculous stories from Kal Penn’s idiosyncratic life. It’s about being the grandson of Gandhian freedom fighters, and the son of immigrant parents: people who came to this country with very little and went very far—and whose vision of the American dream probably never included their son sliding off an oiled-up naked woman in the raunchy Ryan Reynolds movie Van Wilder…or getting a phone call from Air Force One as Kal flew with the country’s first Black president. “By turns hilarious, poignant, and inspiring” (David Axelrod, New York Times bestselling author), Kal reflects on the most exasperating and rewarding moments from his journey so far. He pulls back the curtain on the nuances of opportunity and racism in the entertainment industry and recounts how he built allies, found encouragement, and dealt with early reminders that he might never fit in. He describes his initially unpromising first date with his now-fiancé Josh, involving an 18-pack of Coors Light and an afternoon of watching NASCAR. And of course, he reveals how, after a decade and a half of fighting for and enjoying successes in Hollywood, he made the terrifying but rewarding decision to take a sabbatical from a fulfilling acting career for an opportunity to serve his country as an Obama White House aide. Above all, You Can’t Be Serious shows that everyone can have more than one life story. The book “is insightful, funny, and instructive for anyone who’s ever grappled with how they fit into the American dream” (Ronan Farrow, New York Times bestselling author), and demonstrates that no matter who you are and where you come from, you have many more choices than those presented to you. And okay, yes, it’s also about how Kal accidentally (and very stupidly) accepted an invitation to take the entire White House Office of Public Engagement to a strip club—because, let’s be honest, that’s the kind of stuff you really want to hear about. Sarah Hwang, author of Toasty, an amazing children's book about identity and belonging, joins Jerry to share her story of growing up in New Jersey and finding her path into the creative world and becoming a children's book author. Learn more about her and her work at Sarah-Hwang.com Meet Sarah Sarah Hwang was born in South Korea and moved to the U.S at the age of six. Moving to a foreign country at a young age, she used drawing and creating as a way of communication and expression. Sarah was inspired to become a picture book writer and illustrator after reading books that gave her comfort and made her laugh during her childhood. She went on to receive a BFA in illustration at the Maryland Institute College of Arts. Sarah’s goal as an illustrator and writer is to bring happiness and inspire creativity in people through her works. She loves to incorporate fun and humor in everything she creates. In addition, Sarah enjoys adding faces to just about anything, like a piece of Toast. About Toasty Toasty's story was inspired by my own struggles as an immigrant child wanting to fit in. During my childhood, picture books played a vital role in my life. When I saw and read books with characters that I could relate to I felt comforted and encouraged by them. It gave me the strength to persevere through my hardships. Through my work, I wanted to do the same for my readers. I want to encourage people to embrace being different. It was a tough journey getting to where I am now, but I hope that my experiences and Toasty’s story can be a source of comfort to our community. Danny Taing, Founder & CEO of Bokksu, shares his journey from academia, tech, and eventually to founding Bokksu, a direct-to-consumer snack subscription and e-grocer highlighting snacks from Japan and beyond. Learn more at Bokksu.com and @bokksu everywhere Meet Danny Danny Taing is the Founder & CEO of Bokksu, a New York and Tokyo-based D2C snack subscription and e-grocer that delivers authentic Japanese food and lifestyle products to over 100 countries. She has been composing since she was 8, songwriting since she was 12, and writing musicals since she was 14 years old. In college, observing a lack of Asian students in theater, Julia co-founded the Harvard College Asian Student Arts Project (ASAP), a club created to provide the resources and community for Asian student artists, and co-wrote their first production, a musical called The East Side. She also advised and performed as “Paulette” in ASAP’s all-Asian production of Legally Blonde: The Musical, which received national recognition in fall 2021. Julia was the inaugural recipient of the Musicians United for Social Equity (MUSE) Linda Twine Scholarship (2021) as well as a member of the first MUSE One-on-One Mentorship Program (2021-22) in which she was paired with composer Jeanine Tesori. Angela Kim, Creator and Blogger of the popular Mommy Diary, joins Jerry on the show to share her story of finding her unique voice in the world of content creation as an Asian American mother of four, what drives her work, and what others who also want to create content can learn from her journey. Learn more about her work at Mommy-Diary.com. Happy Mother's Day! Meet Angela Angela Kim, who suffered from postpartum depression after her second child, turned to write blogs to find happiness. She was a stay-at-home mom who recognized that she needed to take care of herself as she was going through depression. She turned to write to find her happiness and loved to share her experiences as a mom on her blog. Angela is a parenting influencer who started the Mommy Diary blog and is also the host for a podcast with the same name. Many might have come across her on Pinterest or Instagram , where she shares her stories through photography. Angela has inspired and guided thousands of parents in regards to lifestyle, motherhood, and traveling. She shares her experiences of how she overcame personal struggles as a stay-at-mom mother. Reading has been Angela’s hobby for a long time. She pursued English and Visual Arts in college to become a professor. For years, she worked as an educator in a local university and was happy with her career. However, her first child was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, SYNGAP1. To take care of her child, she decided to quit her job as an English professor and stay at home. It was hard for Angela to put aside her ambitions to wake up early, cook meals, take care of her kids, and do the chores around the house. She was overwhelmed with all the household chores and couldn’t find any time to take care of herself and her mental well-being. Ultimately, that led to depression. Fortunately, she found a way to share her experiences and connect with others through writing. She started Mommy Diary and wrote blogs on parenting and motherhood. The experiences she had with her children made her share a lot of valuable information appreciated by new parents around the world. Soon she became a parenting influencer online with her vast experience. Her focus was on postpartum depression and having children with special needs. Angela often wonders what it would have been like if she started earlier during her parenthood journey. If only she didn’t hesitate and thought it was already too late to make another parenting blog. Then maybe, she could have been more successful than she is now. At the same time, however, Angela believes that it only worked well because she started at the perfect time and at her own pace. When she made up her mind to become a blogger, she focused on working hard towards her goals. She reached out to other parents on social media to talk about their experiences and realizations after having a child. She also attended conferences that discussed parenthood, such as Boss Moms, Influential Summit, and Mom 2.0, to learn as much as she could. She was even nominated as Instagram of the Year by Mom 2.0, which is like the Oscars for mom bloggers! Over the years, Angela J. Kim has worked with notable lifestyle brands such as Disney, Samsung, Starbucks, Target, H&M, Popsugar and Amazon among many others. With her beautiful photography, creative videos and professional writing skills, she continues to garner attention from brands and followers from around the world. Currently, she is regarded as one of the leading Asian American lifestyle bloggers in the motherhood community and has built her business to staggering heights. Mommy Diary has also been featured in Healthline, Mother.ly, Popsugar, and other well-known websites. However, more than the attention and money, Angela loves her career mainly because she has improved as a mother and has helped other parents in their journeys. MyKhanh Shelton, SVP of Equity and Inclusion at WarnerMedia, joins Jerry to share her story of her belief in using media to help bring equity and inclusion to elevate Asian American and other marginalized communities. Listen today to learn about her career path from law, inclusion strategist, to media executive who's using her platform to amplify and uplift all of us. Meet MyKhanh in her own words: I design and implement evidence-based initiatives to make companies more diverse and culturally competent. My 20+ years of experience as a lawyer and inclusion strategist give me the unique background and ability to develop safe and equitable work cultures that drive business productivity, innovation, creativity, and profitability. I place a premium on analytics, counseling, and training to achieve business results. I work to uncover root causes as a means to devise data-driven solutions that produce institutional change. As Senior Vice President, 21st Century Fox Global Inclusion, I worked with senior executives to conceptualize and drive strategic initiatives to increase diversity and foster inclusion in corporate and tv/film production environments. I led a dedicated team to launch first-of-its-kind initiatives, including Inclusion Week (uniting colleagues around the world in conversation with innovators, artists and academics to draw out, examine and enhance inclusive attitudes and behaviors); the Fox DP (Cinematographers) Lab; and the Filmmakers Lab. Prior to that, as Senior Vice President, Employment Law, I was trusted and acknowledged for consistently finding win-win solutions in contentious circumstances, building consensus, accruing buy-in for change initiatives and working through competing interests. I transformed mandatory harassment training into solutions-oriented, engaging opportunities to inspire and equip employees to create safe and inclusive workplaces, resulting in increased productivity and decreased legal risks. I’m passionate about eliminating barriers for people from underrepresented groups and am proud to sit on the board of Facing History and Ourselves, an international non-profit that engages students in an examination of racism, prejudice, and antisemitism to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry.
