"On May 11, 1970, as riots rocked Augusta, a large unfriendly gathering appeared in front of our school in North Augusta, SC, right across the river. The police arrived, and trouble was clearly brewing. I found Curtis, and we talked. The word empathy didn’t become a normal everyday word until 1995 when Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman was published.
