He has served as the architecture critic for New York Magazine, Los Angeles Herald Examiner, and Los Angeles Review of Books. Joseph was a staff reporter for The New York Times, to which he still contributes. A Yale graduate, Joseph also has an M.A. in French Language and Literature from Middlebury College, earned through studies at the Sorbonne, and an M.Arch from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. He has taught studios, mostly in graduate programs, at Columbia University, Pratt Institute, Southern California Institute of Architecture, University of California, Los Angeles, University of Southern California, University of Innsbruck, and Harvard University, the Carpenter Center. Joseph has won several grants from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts; from Furthermore, a branch of New York’s JM Kaplan Fund, and from the NEA.
