You're listening to Voices of Your Village, and today I get to hang out with Dr. Cara Natterson and Vanessa Kroll Bennett to chat about how to make puberty and sex talks less awkward. Our editor, Kristin, for the podcast and Rach both were like, oh my gosh, this episode is gold. I love how approachable Cara and Vanessa are and how much they let me be me in this and share about how little I was spoken to about puberty and sex and how awkward it is now when my kids do things like ask if they can invite me to their penis party. Fear not, Dr. Cara Natterson is a pediatrician and New York Times best -selling author of 10 books including the Care and Keeping of You series and Vanessa Kroll Bennett is a best -selling author and puberty educator. Together, they're two of the most trusted voices on puberty, co -authoring the national bestseller, This Is So Awkward: Modern Puberty Explained , and co -hosting This is So Awkward , the podcast. Cara and Vanessa run Less Awkward , the first company aimed at making puberty more comfortable with a membership for parents, an innovative health and sex ed curriculum for schools, and game -changing products. Cara and Vanessa speak to audiences across the country using science and humor to encourage open, albeit awkward, conversations. A relatable, reliable approach to help keep kids safe and healthy. They don't just hand out this advice, they live it. Between them, they are raising six teenagers. Y 'all, I'm so stoked for you to dive into this episode and to tune in to This is So Awkward , the podcast, and snag their book, This Is So Awkward . All right, folks, let's dive in. You're listening to Voices of Your Village and today we get to talk about a topic that I really need consistently just around me in my space. We got to dive into learning to parent in the language of play with Georgie Wisen -Vincent. She co -authored with Dr. Tina Payne Bryson, one of my favorite parenting authors, their new book, The Way of Play . Georgie is the founder and director of the PlayStrong Institute, a center devoted to the study, research, and practice of play therapy through a neurodevelopment lens, along with Dr. Bryson, the founder and executive director of the Center for Connection, a multidisciplinary clinical practice in Southern California. These are two powerhouses in the field of child development, and I'm so jazzed about this book. It's a phenomenal resource, and you get to hear the real talk with Rach and I at the end in the breakdown. You're listening to Voices of Your Village, and today I am hanging out with our very own Rachel Lounder. We got to chat about what it was like for her receiving stage four cancer diagnosis when Nora was just about to turn two, and parenting through it, and even now today, seven and a half years later, eight years later, what it looks like and how it shows up for her. If you know anyone who has received a cancer diagnosis, if you have received a cancer diagnosis, I hope this is helpful. We talk about things that were helpful for her, things that weren't helpful for her, and how her journey on the emotional side of this has ebbed and flowed and evolved. I'm so grateful that Rach is now cancer -free and count every day as a blessing that we get to have her. She is also the co -author of my upcoming book, Big Kids, Bigger Feelings, publishing in September. I'm so excited to get to do life with her and to share this conversation with y 'all. You're listening to Voices of Your Village. And today I get to hang out with Stefanie Hohl , who has a master's in education and has been teaching children to read for years. She holds advanced degrees in both children's literature and early education, and she has experience running preschool, homeschool, and local storytime programs. Stefanie developed the ABC: See, Hear, Do, Learn to Read method to make early reading fun and easy for kids and their parents. Stefanie lives in Pittsburgh with her husband, five children, and two very silly dogs. I really enjoyed this conversation because I don't know a lot about teaching kids to read. And I do know that what doesn't feel good for me is being like, sit down, do this worksheet. I know that my son who loves movement doesn't retain information this way. So I was really excited to learn from Stefanie and have personally purchased some of her materials because I'm really enjoying them. I love how she incorporates movement with reading. And I feel like I just get the best bang for my buck in terms of the time spent with my tiny human working on these skills. All right, folks, let's dive in. You're listening to Voices of Your Village, and today I get to hang out with Kate Hamilton . She is married to Charlie since 2000 and is a mother of two young adult men who are independent, confident, and productive college students. Some might say she's an unlikely writer because of her dyslexia, yet her life experiences compelled her to write The Imperfect Parent: A Nonjudgmental Guide to Raising Children in the Modern World . She earned an MBA in international business and is a former corporate executive turned mother and entrepreneur. When Kate is not coaching parents and their children, you'll find her volunteering with Lemonade Day, a youth entrepreneur program, planning the next family adventure, or working with Charlie in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was fun to chat with Kate because we know that perfection is not the goal. I also really enjoyed this breakdown with Rach, and you get to hear some of my real -time takeaways where Rach was helping me understand some guilt that I've been experiencing as a parent and really diving into like what's coming up for me there. You're listening to Voices of Your Village and today I got to hang out with Pepper Stetler. She is the author of A Measure of Intelligence: One Mother's Reckoning with the IQ Test . She writes extensively on issues facing people with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Atlantic, Slate, the Progressive. Pepper is a professor of art history at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she lives with her husband and daughter, Louisa. I love this conversation because it is not just about folks with intellectual disabilities. We talked about school systems and how they are not set up systemically to support all of our children. And this is not at the fault of teachers. Teachers are incredible and slaying, and we need to shift the systems in which they work in order to better serve the classroom as a whole, and we got to dive into what that looks like and talk about some of those things. I shared my biggest dreams for what tests look like and how we're utilizing them. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Come on over to Instagram @seed.and.sew and share your thoughts with us. We'll have a post up about this episode, and I want to hear your takeaways and your thoughts and feedback and whether or not your kid might benefit from some of the things that we toss up in this episode. You're listening to Voices of Your Village and today I got a little fired up on this episode. We get to talk about the crucial missing component to fixing child care systems. I got to hang out with Jamee Herbert . She's the CEO and co -founder of BridgeCare , which is a woman -led software company that helps government agencies and nonprofit organizations manage their early care and education ecosystems. BridgeCare is driven by the mission to make high quality early childhood education accessible and affordable for everyone, especially low -income families and communities of color who often face the most barriers to access. Jamee is a member of the United WE National Commission on Child Care and Women's Entrepreneurship, an organization advancing research and policy solutions to reduce red tape in child care licensing and address the childcare crisis for women entrepreneurs. She holds a certificate in early education leadership from Harvard Graduate School, and when she isn't working, you can find her parenting alongside her husband in the Berkshires. Jamee and I got into this bad boy, and this is not just for you if you work in childcare, if you're a part of the early ed system. It's for you if you want to see a boost in the economy, if you want women to have access to the workforce, if you want sustainable solutions for childcare so that we can support kids' development now in these early years, which means down the road, we end up paying so much less for people. You're listening to Voices of Your Village and today I got to hang out with two pediatricians to chat about why time in nature matters for kids and how do you overcome those barriers to outdoor time. I hung out with Pooja Tandon and Danette Glassy, both doctors who work with children and have done research in this space. Dr. Tandon is a general pediatrician and researcher at the Seattle Children's Hospital, an Associate Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and the Director of Health at the Trust for Public Land. She has published widely on the importance of physical activity, outdoor time, and nature contact for health. And she lives in the Seattle area with her husband and two kids. And Dr. Glassy is a Primary Care Pediatrician and Child Advocate. She's the Co -Founder and Board President of the nonprofit Best Start Washington and leads its Project Nature initiative, a program to support pediatric medical professionals as they encourage children to spend time in nature. She is the co -editor of Caring for Our Children. Dr. Glassy lives in the Seattle area and enjoys exploring nature in the Pacific Northwest with her two grandchildren. And what was so relieving about this episode is that, you know, I am not, I would not call myself one with nature. I like to be outside, like that's fun, but I'm like more outsidey than outdoorsy. And I feel like they make this so accessible, whether you're living in a city or you're living in a rural space, whether you love to hike a mountain or you want to like chill in your backyard with your kids. It just felt so much more accessible for me than a lot of the messaging around like getting outside or the 1000 hours outside or whatever can feel so overwhelming. You're listening to Voices of Your Village. And today I got to hang out with Dr. Taylor Day to chat about masking in autism. We dove into what high masking is and how it shows up outside of the autistic community as well. Oh man, it is such a bonkers idea to me that we are still so focused on eliciting certain behaviors when we know that behavior is the communication of a need. We get to dive into all that jazz in this episode. And whether you have a child who is autistic, you're autistic, or you know somebody or not, this episode's for you because you have a nervous system. Every human has a nervous system, and there's so much packed into this conversation that will apply for you and your kids as well. Dr. Taylor Day is a licensed psychologist specializing in neuroaffirming care for autistic children and their families, including very early diagnosis and early intervention. She has a PhD in clinical psychology and is the CEO and founder of Dr. Tay Concierge Clinical Care . Her practice integrates the whole family approach, a process she created utilizing evidence -informed principles after seeing a gap in autism care. Her passion for child psychology and her focus on autism is in many ways tied to her own personal experience growing up with a brother who was diagnosed at 23 months of age. Y 'all, this episode is full of goodness. I am so jazzed for you to dive in.
