When you look at all the books together, there's nothing wrong with that. If you look at them all together on one shelf, you might think, 'How could I ever read all these? Therefore, I won't read anything. It's too much.' So, I thought that at one time, and then I heard this lecture by a person called Brian Tracy, and he was talking about how to get things done. In the lecture, he said, any large task that seems to be beyond your capacity, you can break into small parts. And he called them slices. And then, if they're in small slices and you do them regularly, then, amazingly, you'll be able to complete big tasks. Sounds common sensical, doesn't it? When it comes to reading the books, I was driving home from somebody's house, and I was thinking about what he said, and I was thinking about all the books. As soon as I got home, I started noting down how many pages were in each book, because I realized that there's a finite number of pages. There's a finite number of pages in the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, right? At least on this planet. There are other planets, higher planets, where there are more volumes. So, you can aspire for that too, if you like. And when I realized there's a finite number, I thought, well, let me get the number, because then I can divide it into small slices. So, I made a little chart with a little help from my friends, and it had a list of all the Prabhupāda's books, and then it had next to it time periods that it would take to finish each one. And I discovered that there was a finite number, and I can ascribe a certain number to read each day in order to complete within a set amount of time. How helpful on a scale of one to ten? You might say, 'Vaisesika Dasa, on a scale of one to ten, how helpful was that to you?' I'd say it was about a ten, because I immediately felt energized, and I thought, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to pick a number of pages I can read each day, and I know for sure that I'll complete it within a certain amount of time. And then I branded it. You want to hear what the brand is? Be a sage, page by page. And I took to this discipline of reading a certain number of pages a day. On a practical level, on paper, I have these flags that you get at any office supply store, and you stick them, and you can unstick them, and unless you get some grit on them, they'll stick over and over again for maybe hundreds of times. And so, what I do is get two of them, and on one of them, I'd write the number of pages that I was going to read every day. And on the other one, I put a little arrow. So, there are two flags that I used and still use. 1:12:54'Brahmāṇḍa bhramite kono bhāgyavān jīva guru-kṛṣṇa-kṛpāya pāya bhakti-latā-bīja' (CC. Madhya 19.151) means we are aimlessly moving from one body to the next, one universe to the next, and then, by the grace of Kṛṣṇa, one gets a guru, by the grace of the Guru, one gets Kṛṣṇa. And so, Lord Nityānanda is the original guru, and he reveals the importance of Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu to all the devotees and reveals that He's the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Caitanya Mahāprabhu took sanyāsa and He headed for this place, Jagannātha Puri. And this is a stop before you get to Puri. It's about six miles away. Of course, they were walking; this is pretty far along from Navadvīpa when they stopped here. From the Caitanya Charitāmrita you will note that they stopped in various places and what did they do? They engaged in Kṛṣṇa Kathā. In fact Nityānanda had heard from others the story of Kṣīra-corā gopīnātha. He told that story here, and the devotees just enjoyed it. Everything was going fine until Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu asked Nityānanda to hold his dandā. You know when you ask somebody to hold your bead bag and say you'll be right back? Then you come back and say, "Where's my bag?" "Oh, I don't have it anymore." I never had that happen, but somebody actually cut off my śikhā when they were helping buzz me up. Since then, I learned how to do it myself. They thought it was funny. I didn't think it was that funny. They were like, "ha ha ha, it'll grow back." It's a big deal to a brahmacārī, okay? So, Nityānanda had broken his dandā in three parts and threw it away, apparently in this river. When Caitanya Mahāprabhu came back and asked for His dandā, Nitai said, "You know, you broke it because you were in ecstasy. I tried to save you from fainting, and we both fell on the dandā and it broke and now it's gone." He had different excuses for why the dandā was gone. Now both Vṛndāvana Dāsa Ṭhākura and ā Dāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī, and then our ācāryas like Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, mention the importance of this pastime. It is still enigmatic, even though they give different descriptions, because it's enigmatic in and of itself that Supreme is one, but He expands Himself into many. That's why I brought up that verse 'Vadanti tat tattva-vidas tattvaṁ yaj jñānam advayam' in an attempt to build a foundational basis for this talk today. Because there’s a way in which it's incomprehensible how the Supreme is everything and He is one, advaya but at the same time he has variety. But it makes a lot of sense to me anyway because the Supreme is all-cognizant, full of bliss, eternality, and ānanda. and that's why I also mentioned that for there to be ananda there has to be loving relationship. So, how is this a significant and loving relationship between Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Lord Nityānanda? Why did He break the dandā? Even more mysteriously, why did Caitanya Mahāprabhu dictate from within that Nityānanda should break the dandā? It is even more curious why Caitanya Mahāprabhu then became angry if he's the one, as Vṛndāvana Dāsa Ṭhākura says, who inspired Nitāi to break it the first place? This is a good example of vaidhi-bhakti. You're disturbed when you're three minutes late. This means a very strict idea of how to follow the process. I have a god brother, Saurī Dāsa, who lived with him in the ashram in Hawaii and other places, and he's down to the second. Everything's like, "Get out of my way. We got to do this now," and everything has to be fixed and regulated. He gets up at the same time, and actually, in the beginning of the practice of devotional service, or throughout, we find that the great devotees, Raghunātha Dāsa Goswāmī's practice was like lines in stone, very strictly following. This leads to more advanced stages of the practice of devotional service. So that's good to hear that your mind becomes disturbed by being three minutes late.Hare Kṛṣṇa. I'll read something for our last section. This is from the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam six canto, Ajāmila delivered by the Viṣṇudūtas. "One who chants the holy name of the Lord is immediately freed from the reactions of unlimited sins, even if he chants indirectly to indicate something else, jokingly for musical entertainment or even neglectfully. This is accepted by all the learned scholars of the scriptures. If one chants the holy name of Hari and then dies because of an accidental misfortune, such as falling from the top of a house, slipping and suffering broken bones while traveling on the road, being bitten by a serpent, being afflicted with pain and high fever, or being injured by a weapon, one is immediately absolved from having to enter hellish life, even though he is sinful." ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose #makejapagreatagain #mantra #mantrameditation #chantharekrishnaandbehappy #harekrishna…

1 Organize Your Life To Remember Kṛṣṇa Favourably | HG Vaiśeṣika Dāsa | ISV Yatra | 13 Jan 2023 41:13
As early as this morning, I heard Prabhupāda speaking about how, when we travel, we have many requirements to get from one place to another. For instance, going to a foreign country, he said, requires a visa. He said for his, coming to America, he had to show his bonafides and he had to have some special paperwork. And he said for going anywhere, we need to prepare ourselves. It's not that just willy-nilly you can go from one place to another, nor can you willy-nilly just go back to Godhead by accident. It's a 'śīla,' it's a cultivation that one enacts in this lifetime, and one develops one's bonafides. And you get a visa and a passport and so forth. You should have your paperwork in order. Like right now, we're already thinking about just going from here to Calcutta It is a big deal, right? Say yes, otherwise, you may be left behind. I mean, you've got to figure out how much you can bring; you've got to figure out is my ticket, is it my name spelled correctly, and so forth. So there's this sense Prabhupāda was instilling in us, and I mean by this lecture he was giving this morning is, don't think that it's something that just happens if you're haphazard, but be very deliberate about it. So this verse inspires us in this way to look at the end of life. 'Ante' means the end when you leave the body and we've been reading every evening chapter of Bhagavad-gītā chapter 15 in which Kṛṣṇa gives the science of what happens when you leave your body. 1 Get Kṛṣṇa’s Glance in Bhakti by Giving Your Full Attention to The Holy Names | ISV | 21 Aug 2021 17:00
We have to take strength from Lord Balarāma. Part of the spiritual strength is to have the enthusiasm and the remembrance, which perhaps precedes the enthusiasm, to take our beads every day and make a valiant effort against the strong waves of māyā to fully take the names of Kṛṣṇa.And one other point is that it's not insignificant if we give our attention to the chanting. In the story of Balarāma killing Dhenukāsura and Kṛṣṇa killing all the other āsura demons, after this pastime in the Bhāgavatam, Kṛṣṇa, Balarāma, and all their friends and cows are entering back into the Vṛndāvana village. And it's noted there that the gopīs are watching them come into the city. And their eyes are all on Kṛṣṇa like bees going to a flower. But the description there is that Kṛṣṇa accepted their glance as an offering, and they were saying, were the gopīs, when they glanced at him, shyly, albeit very shyly, they glanced at him, that "this is all we have to offer. We don't have anything else in our home, and we can't go anywhere. We're restricted, but what we have is our glance that we can offer you." And so Kṛṣṇa took that as the greatest offering that they wanted. They wanted to look at him, and he reciprocated by giving his glance back. And what's in Kṛṣṇa’s glance? Everything. So in japa, we have the same opportunity that the residents of Vṛndāvana had. It's a Vṛndāvana pastime, actually, chanting Kṛṣṇa’s names. "Rāma, Rāma, Mahābāho," the cowherd boys chant it. And so when we chant japa, if we give our glance to the holy name, that's the best offering, and Kṛṣṇa will glance back at us. And that's where our spiritual strength comes from. It's when there's a reciprocation as we give ourselves to the holy name, and then Kṛṣṇa again reciprocates with us. And then we'll feel that, yes, now I'm in the flow of the spiritual energy, and we'll know it for ourselves. Nobody has to come in and give us a certificate. The Padma Purana says, "Ataḥ śrī-kṛṣṇa-nāmādi na bhaved grāhyam indriyaiḥ sevonmukhe hi jihvādau svayam eva sphuraty adaḥ." If you serve Kṛṣṇa with your tongue by chanting in that mood, then he'll be pleased to reveal himself to the chanter. Otherwise, we can't understand God by attending physics classes or philosophy classes or any other kind of empiric observation. He can reveal himself to the humble soul, and he especially reveals Himself through His name. That's the knowledge and that's the practice. So, we're very fortunate to have received it through the tradition passed down by Kṛṣṇa Himself, in the form of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and that's why we're gathered together while everyone else in the rest of Silicon Valley is snoozing, to chant and serve Kṛṣṇa by the chanting. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose…

Question: This question relates more to the class you gave in the morning about Nārada Muni's life. And so I was wondering more related to what kinds of goals to set, especially in terms of our spiritual category, because Nārada Muni, in very short span of time, from what it seemed in the chapter, he was able to achieve a very advanced stage in his spiritual life.https://youtu.be/xLcU7UrXj74?t=3546 Since most of us, have been born in devotee families and so on, that's likely because of previous lives' credit that we've had, we've done devotional service, but we haven't been able to fully get there. We're at some stage, but how do we jumpstart and go to a place where like, like Nārada Muni, just immediately, very quickly, was able to reach a very advanced stage, what would you say is very important to focus on in the different kinds of practices that are available, like reading, chanting, service and so on. There's so many opportunities. Where should we spend our time to really go very quickly and advance? https://youtu.be/xLcU7UrXj74?t=3546 Excerpt from the answer: Be grateful for what you have now. Practice gratitude. Because you're always somewhere and if you're always looking, oh, it's not good enough, it's too slow, I got to go somewhere else, then you always feel a little out of balance. But if you're grateful for what you have right now, then in the present moment, you'll appreciate exactly what Krishna has given you.. 1 Bhakti Cannot Arise In The Heart Without Humility | HG Vaiśeṣika Dāsa | ISV Yātrā | 12 Feb 2024 49:43
Today, I thought of this because of going to Śrīla Bhakti Siddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura's Bhajana Kuṭīra and it's on a hill, which is the sand dune. There's a pastime around that also. But thinking of Śrīla Bhakti Siddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, and we'll talk about it more when we go there today, he advocated humility. "Tṛṇād api sunīcena taror api sahiṣṇunā amāninā mānadena kīrtanīyaḥ sadā Hariḥ." It's easy enough to roll off my tongue and say, "Yeah, I already know that verse," but how much have I applied it? One of the teachings of the Bṛhat Bhāgavatāmṛta is that there's no possibility for bhakti to arise within the heart of a devotee unless there's dainya or utter humility. Or the concept is that bhakti and dainya go together; they are co-dependents. In other words, someone may say "I have developed pure love for God," but if there's no humility, then that's a farce because they go together - dainya, utter humility. It is also one of the points that Caitanya Mahāprabhu makes again in the Madhya-līlā, in the same section, when he's talking about bhāva, the symptoms of one whose heart is becoming softened by the practice of devotional service. He mentions there that such a person feels paradoxically less and less qualified as he or she becomes more qualified. The more qualified one becomes, the less qualified one considers oneself. And it doesn't mean that the devotee becomes dysfunctional. Prabhupāda talks about that in his prayers called Vṛndāvana-bhajana before he came to America. He was talking about Arjuna as a great warrior, and he said that Vaiṣṇavas, they don't shrink from their duties in the world, even if they're called to go to battle. They'll stand courageously and fight to do their duty. So it's not that they become morose and think, "What is the term I'm thinking of? They lose self-esteem, they lack self-esteem, and think, 'I can't do anything, and nobody likes me anyway,'" that kind of thing. Nonetheless, there's this growing sense of being only useful when engaged in devotional service of the Lord and fully surrendered to the Lord's will and doing everything according to the direction of the Lord. I mentioned it in the context of us going to see Śrīla Bhakti Siddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura's temple today because it's one of the principles that he emphasized again and again. It's such a simple principle that one might miss it and think, "Yeah, I've heard that before," but revisiting it again and again, in the mood in which Caitanya Mahāprabhu says to keep oneself in that position of humility, is one of the foundational principles of devotional service, and it's something to be cultivated. What we think of, what we fix our intelligence and our mind upon, is indicative of the kinds of emotions that we will develop. So, Caitanya Mahāprabhu told Prakāśānanda Sarasvatī a verse that he learned from his guru: "evaṁ-vrataḥ sva-priya-nāma-kīrtyā jātānurāgo druta-citta uccaiḥ hasaty atho roditi rauti gāyaty unmāda-van nṛtyati loka-bāhyaḥ (SB 11.2.40)." That is, when one chants Hare Kṛṣṇa, because Kṛṣṇa's name is completely spiritual, then gradually the heart will change. Druta-citta means it will melt from the stone-like condition of meditating on one stone house, thinking, "This is my everything." Then the heart becomes softer, and it melts, and one then is able to enjoy spiritual emotion, which has become dormant due to one's association with matter. So, the purpose of chanting is to serve Kṛṣṇa and also to save ourselves from the material condition by transferring our intelligence and our awareness to the Nāma Cintāmaṇi Kṛṣṇas and away from a stone house. So, during these japa circles, we have full permission to take our minds away from the stone-like objects that we may have become accustomed to thinking of and to fully surrender our awareness to thinking of Kṛṣṇa and His Holy Names. Thoughts start in the lower chakra here; this is in the Bhāgavatam. And then they proceed up through these different energy centers, and they become more clear to us. They come as a subtle feeling, and then they come into the thought world. And when they come to here, there's a chakra here - that's when you voice it. So desires, subtle thoughts, and then they get voiced, and then you say it. And once you say it, especially if you put it on the internet, it's practically impossible to take back. What's happened is you've manifested something, an idea, a thought, and then it's come from subtle and it becomes grossified . And when you write it down, when you sit down, this is no ordinary thing: to sit down and decide what's important to you, write as a goal. And so what if you still have proclivities in another direction? This will start pulling you. And there's an uncanny way in which—at least I can say just anecdotal from my life. I was a brahmachari for 13 years, and I started when I was 16, and I got married when I was 29. When I was 29, I said, "I've got to decide how I'm going to organize my life." So I wrote down a whole list of goals. I hadn't seen my parents that much because I was mostly in ashrams and traveling around the world. I stopped at their house on my way to India, and I had my goal list, just written on a piece of paper, and I accidentally left it there. I remember my father wrote to me. They were being protective of me because I had never really interacted with the world that much. I just went right into the ashram and was fully absorbed. And they had all these what looked to them like super ambitious goals, and they probably were. And they were trying to help me balance my life and saying, "Don't expect that much from the world. Maybe too much of what you've put here." I remember several years later after that, they gave me the paper back when I saw them next time. But when I went through the list some years later, I realized that I achieved everything on it. I started thinking about how there's a subconscious force. When you decide what you want and you write it down, it starts to manifest. And then even if you're going in a different direction, if you keep reminding yourself what your goals are—that's one of the points I'll make about goal setting—is to keep it visible. This morning, I was listening to Śrīla Prabhupāda, and he was saying that it's not hard to see God. He said it's easy. He said it's just that you do not want to see God. And this indicates that it's our attitude which is most important when we're approaching The Holy Names. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu gave simple but ample instructions about Kṛṣṇa's names, and one of them is that he’s not different from his name, and that all the potencies—all his personal potencies, which is the meaning of God, He's all potent—are present there within the name, just as they are in the person. There's no difference. But then Rūpa Gosvāmī says, but there is a difference, even though the name and the named—Vācam Vācakam—means the name and the named. Everyone says they’re not different, but he said they are different. He said because The Holy Name is even more merciful than Kṛṣṇa, because one may abandon Kṛṣṇa, turn away from Kṛṣṇa, but The Holy Name comes to reclaim us and give us an opportunity. As Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura says in the last song of his Śaraṇāgati, Kṛṣṇa, in the form of The Holy Name, takes him by the hand back to Godhead and leads him to his relationship with Kṛṣṇa, which is inconceivable. Nonetheless, we have the opportunity, wherever we may be, to take the Mahāmantra to heart as our main means of connecting with Kṛṣṇa and inviting him to take us by the hand also. What if one morning, or afternoon, or evening, we suddenly came to the realization that we've been needlessly working hard for people who don't care about our ultimate welfare, and that death and taxes are not inevitable, that we can rise above them? Well, that's the message of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, that we're not meant for this world. We have a higher mode of existence which has to do with the goings-on in the spiritual world, which are full of bliss and knowledge and they're based on loving service, not hard work, drudgery, and death. And then, what if we found out there was a method through which we could transform our hearts and minds, and transfer ourselves to that realm? And then, what if we found out it was easily available to every human being who has a tongue and the inclination to be connected to that world? Well, such a thing has happened, and that's why we're here. So the rest of the world may consider that this is a normal place, but it's not—this, meaning the material world. And Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, to those who have a hankering for more, who have tasted something unusual and want to enter into that realm, has given the Mahamantra. So it's a prayer which is begging Kṛṣṇa and Rādhārānī for service. We're simply begging for service in that realm which may begin and does begin in this realm. The mode of service doesn't have to wait to be transferred somewhere; it has to do with our intention. So, as we chant today, we can remember how fortunate we are to have received this information from the spiritual world and the means to transfer ourselves there, even while we're in this world. How do you know that you're real? Are you real? How do you know? You just know, right? Yeah, you wake up in the morning you know that you're alive. Can you prove it mathematically? No. So, some things you know by seeing them, they're self-revealing. So, the fact that we're alive, we know that we exist. "I think, therefore I am," means I'm aware. So, I know I exist. Similarly, Kṛṣṇa is the source of all existence. When one comes in contact with Kṛṣṇa, it becomes self-evident, just like when you see the sun, you know the sun's out, right? And you recognize it's the source of all light and energy in the universe. 1:11:18I read an article about a woman who was born in poverty, and she was also discriminated against because of her race. But her friends described how she became a highly successful person because of her work ethic, and they said how she wouldn't waste a moment. For example, once the bus broke down on the way to school, and everybody else waited for an alternative bus, but she walked because she didn't want to miss even a minute. That was representative of how she conducted herself. So, Kṛṣṇa says, if you want to elevate your consciousness and be transferred to a higher position in your next life, then practice. And how much should you practice? A lot ! A lot ! Like as much as you can to practice in this life. Use every opportunity to practice. So, that's what he says in the next verse: "abhyāsa-yoga-yuktena cetasā nānya-gāminā paramaṁ puruṣaṁ divyaṁ yāti pārthānucintayan." That means practice, abhyāsa means practice. And so, that's what this International Society for Krishna Consciousness is. It's for—those who are serious about improving themselves, not just a little bit, but solving all problems. You could solve the temporary problems, and for a while, you might feel on steady ground, but there is no steady ground in this world, ultimately, even for those who get stable according to material standards... A personal meditation of mine that I recommend is to think of the Ācāryas while chanting. In other words, you can start with the disciplic succession coming from Jagannāth Dāsa Bābājī Mahārāja and imagine that you've come to his Kuṭīra and just offered Daṇḍavats for half an hour and then taken some dust from there. Then take permission to sit outside and listen to him chant and chant along with him. And then you can go down to Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, down the line. Even if you have a picture of the Ācāryas, that's why we have their pictures—to remember this 'sato vṛtteḥ,' following their footsteps in their mood. It's a very sweet meditation to just remember that we're following their footsteps and actually be with them when we're chanting. It's a very enlivening kind of practice.
