On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. Michael Bailey and Scott H. Gardner bring you yet another exciting installment of the show recently voted one of the 10 best on the internet! “This is a true labour of love it seems. Michael Bailey and Two True Freaks’ Scott Gardner host this great little show. Tales of the Justice Society of America is a sort of issue by issue analysis of the Justice Society and associated characters since the 1970′s revival of All Star Comics. It covers All Star Comics 58-74, the Adventure Comics back up strips and around episode 31 it started looking at the All Star Squadron, a period piece set in the 1940′s of DC’s Earth 2 spotlighting the lesser known golden age heroes like Johnny Quick, Liberty Belle and Shining Knight as well as retconned characters like Firebrand and Commander Steel. The issues are reviewed and then there are tangents and related conversations, e-mails and a look at the adds, the highlight of which are the hostess fruit pies ads. If you don’t love the JSA by the start, you’ll be closer after the first episode.” — http://liverpoolmunky76.wordpress.com/2014/06/06/podcasts/ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ This time around, the fellas take a look at All-Star Squadron #39 — the penultimate chapter of the Detroit Race-Riots Saga! Also — Infinity, Inc. #8 features “The Generations Saga” barreling toward its exciting conclusion! And, finally, there’s “Elsewhere in the DC Multiverse – Crisis Management Edition” in which the guys discuss the Pre-Crisis Monitor appearances for November, 1984! Give a listen and find out what the all the hubbub is about!! http://twotruefreaks.com/media/podcasts/talesjsa/mp3/JSAEp083.mp3…

“Tales” is back — and this time we brought damn near the entire DC Comics creative team (circa 1984) with us!! This episode, the burning question of “why haven’t you guys been addressing listener feedback?!” is discussed. Are they too busy? Are they too lazy? Maybe they can’t read? Fear Not! All Will Be Revealed! Then, it is on to the Main Event!! All-Star Squadron Annual #3! Didja ever wonder how all these heroes of World War II stayed so seemingly young and spry well into the 1980s and beyond? Well, Mike and Scott break down that story for you into convenient, bite-sized pieces. And, in the process, have lots and lots to say about the multitude of talent on this book. Writer Roy Thomas is joined by some of the top DC super-stars of the day for the handling of the art chores — Jerry Ordway, Rick Hoberg, Richard Howell, Keith Giffen, Rich Buckler, Wayne Boring, Carmine Infantino, Don Newton, and George Perez — just to name a few!! We’re Back! First off, in the interest of full disclosure, Mike and Scott have had some serious technical difficulties of late! For one thing, Scott’s computer went tango uniform. Some say that it was because it just got old. Others suggest that Scott’s secret addiction to vodka and Red Bull got to him one night. In either case, his computer died. And as if that weren’t bad enough, Mike has had one helluva tough time with the new website. Some say that it’s because his ISP and the site don’t get along. Others suggest that Mike’s secret addiction to vodka and Red Bull is keeping him from posting stuff. In either case, Mike just can’t get episodes to post from his set-up. But things are better now. Betty Ford has entered the picture. Episodes should be more frequent. Until then — Are you ready for something that is so awesome it makes Roadhouse look lame? Then get ready for the seventy-fifth episode of “Tales”! In this show, Scott and Mike cover All-Star Squadron #35 and boy is this thing great! I mean, look at that cover! HOURMAN VS. BARON BLITZKREIG! It can’t get better than that, can it? Nothing could ruin that, right? Not even the appearance of the lamest hero since Johnny Thunder? Who is this hero? Why is he so lame? Listen to the episode and find out already! ENJOY!! http://twotruefreaks.com/media/podcasts/talesjsa/mp3/JSAEp075.mp3…

GET READY FOR THE EPISODE THE ICICLE HIMSELF DIDN’T WANT YOU TO HEAR!!!! That’s right, folks. This episode was finished and ready to go out the door when an ice storm hit the area where Mike lives and knocked out his power — for three days!! One of those days was Friday, our normal release day, which means that the nefarious Icicle, long time villain of Justice Society, must have been responsible. It’s the only explanation that makes any sense! …or maybe it’s winter and such things just happen… Either way, Scott and Mike are still blaming the Icicle. Anyway, Welcome to the 74th episode of Tales! The guys continue their look at both the past and the even-further-back-there past this time out in an episode that was recorded about a year ago!! (So if some of the references they make seem a little dated that’s why) Their first book is ALL-STAR SQUADRON #34, where the All-Stars face off against Tsunami — which means tidal wave apparently. Word on the street, or at least the cover, is that it also means death. What did Scott and Mike think of the issue? And what did they think of Infinity Inc. #3, which has Solomon Grundy wants pants too? Listen and find out! DO IT NOW!! http://twotruefreaks.com/media/podcasts/talesjsa/mp3/JSAEp074.mp3…

Hey, you waited like two years, what’s one extra day? ——————————————————– By popular demand and at the insistence of their publicist (and there might be a court order in there somewhere) Scott H. Gardner and Michael R. Bailey have brought back Tales of the Justice Society of America! Yes, indeed, ladies and gentlemen, Scott and Mike have returned. After a nearly two year hiatus and a couple of false starts the guys have gotten their act together and are once again talking about the adventures of the heroes from Earth-2. This time out they spend a good portion of the episode talking about the hiatus and the various attempts they have made to get the show going again. They also talk about the history of the show for those that are just discovering it. Once all that stuff is out of the way the guys get their feet wet with an installment of the newly minted Origins of Crisis on Infinite Earths. Scott and Mike have no idea how many of these there will be or if they will ever do it again but for the moment we’ll assume that there will be more of these sorts of episodes. The guys reach all the way back to 1965 and discuss Green Lantern #40! In that issue Alan Scott and Hal Jordan team up and then try to beat the snot out of each other all because of some guy named Krona. This issue is integral to not only the history of the DC Multiverse but also to Crisis on Infinite Earths as a story! The real question is this; was this book any good? Was it bad? Were there things they could poke fun at? The answer to those questions and more are locked within this episode! http://twotruefreaks.com/media/podcasts/talesjsa/mp3/JSATheReturn.mp3…

In this episode Mike and Scott begin their new format, at least for the time being. Instead of covering one book an episode they are going to discuss a cover month worth of Justice Society related comics. This week that cover month is May 1984, which included All-Star Squadron #33 (where the Spectre gets whiney and the Freedom Fighters fight for…well, they fight for freedom…it is kind of in the name) and Infinity, Inc. #2 (where the Infiitors settles on a name and eat at a thinly disguised McDonald’s). These books are a mixed bag leading to the usual mix of commentary and banter that you have come to expect from this show. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. It will become a part of you. Hand to God. Next time: June 1984. Your reading assignments are All-Star Squadron #34 and Infinity, Inc. #3! http://twotruefreaks.com/media/podcasts/talesjsa/mp3/JSAEp073.mp3…

Scott and Mike head back to the forties this week to cover All-Star Squadron #32. Well, they get to that eventually. First they become sidetracked with Mike going on and on about some funny books he is selling on eBay and then they end up talking about the whole Before Watchmen thing, which was not their original intention. With all of that out of the way the guys dive into the issue and Mike ends up being a tad more critical of the artwork than Scott was. The story was cool though and we find out the back story of how Uncle Sam not only got a bunch of heroes killed but ended up getting the United States involved in World War II on an alternate Earth. Plus we get more of Hourman and Wonder Woman ties a few heroes up to get them to tell the truth, which is probably less creepy than it sounds. You can check out Mike’s eBay auctions by clicking on this link ! Next time: All-Star Squadron #32 and Infinity Inc. #2! http://twotruefreaks.com/media/podcasts/talesjsa/mp3/JSAEp072.mp3…

Tales of the JSA has reached yet another milestone! Infinity, Inc. is here. Scott and Mike kick this series off in fine style first by bringing back the original theme music to the show and then by spending the first twenty or so minutes of the show talking about stuff other than Infinity, Inc. #1. This is how they roll. If you have been listening to the show for any length of time you should have expected it, really. The guys begin the episode by talking about how sick they both are, proving that they are huge whiners. Then Mike brings up the recently announced Earth-2 related series that DC will be publishing in a few months. This is followed by talk of DC’s new logo, which is not at vitriolic as you might expect. Then, finally, Mike and Scott cover Infinity, Inc. #1 and you will be surprised at how the guys feel about this first issue. Next time: All-Star Squadron #32. http://twotruefreaks.com/media/podcasts/talesjsa/mp3/JSAEp071.mp3…
