On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. ×How do you appropriately scale who participates in life with you? Personally & professionally? In any given interaction? Too exclusive, missed opportunity.. Too inclusive, dilute essence & integrity..
Thinking out loud re: the spectrum of unpolished to polished, simple to complex language.
Perhaps the rawest reflection I’ve ever shared on how some of my greatest assets as a coach (improvisation, play, exploration, charm) have actually enabled me to compensate the process. This is a short listen! Tune in and reach out if this speaks to you.
A 6-minute discussion on navigating advice culture... feel free to chime in by connecting with me on IG @rhetoricinmotion !!
How much of what you say is conversational conditioning versus what you *actually* wish to say? With a bonus nugget at the end on the gift of telling others or being told, “I see you.”
Rhetoric in Motion is ready to grow into a classroom... but are you?
The fear of public speaking is common. But so is a fear of intimate conversations. The modern digital landscape enables us to “handle” our messages through a number of different channels, but often times we choose less direct channels than would actually benefit us... Let’s have a discussion about that.…
This might be the simplest and most effective communication tool that Rhetoric in Motion has ever shared. Give me 9 minutes of your time and listen..
Indulge with me here on some heavy ish! As always, I encourage you to share your thoughts! Love, Kimmy
Viewing communication as a means to HUNT for human connection. Are you intentional with how you pursue nourishing & valuable connection? Maybe you should be..
Let’s talk communication pedagogy! (Pedagogy = teaching style.) A call to action to reflect upon (and IMPROVE) the learning environment you either a) subject others to, or b) subject yourself to. LET’S KEEP IT REAL, PEOPLE. We can be better when it comes to communication education.
Exploring the sweet spot between rigidity & flexibility to increase your ability to have positive associations. This is a quick 7:00! Give this a listen and feel free to chime in with your feedback. Love, Kimmy
How in tune are you with how your communication (both content AND delivery) impacts your group?
Approaching connection with others according to periods of your lifespan, as opposed to the tendency/compulsion to reach/unlock the “next” level.
Greetings from Lincoln Blvd (apologies for sound)
