When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Learn more at www.lbi.org/kollisch . Exile is a production of the Leo Baeck Institute , New York | Berlin and Antica Productions . It’s narrated by Mandy Patinkin. Executive Producers include Katrina Onstad, Stuart Coxe, and Bernie Blum. Senior Producer is Debbie Pacheco. Associate Producers are Hailey Choi and Emily Morantz. Research and translation by Isabella Kempf. Sound design and audio mix by Philip Wilson, with help from Cameron McIver. Theme music by Oliver Wickham. Voice acting by Natalia Bushnik. Special thanks to the Kollisch family for the use of Eva’s two memoirs, “Girl in Movement” and “The Ground Under My Feet”, the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College and their “Voices of Feminism Oral History Project”, and Soundtrack New York.…

Schizophrenic Music in more than just a podcast, it's a casual conversation between 2 passionate music fans that illustrates how music makes their world a better place to live in. There is no pretense, we like what we like and we absolutely love to talk about it. Concerts, new album releases, what we listened to on the way to work...you name it. If it involves the music we love (or even hate) we'll share it with the world if they're willing to listen.

×There seems to be an insatiable need for people to compartmentalize music and it doesn't stop at genres either. Does the date of an album's release really matter in the grand scheme of things? And is there a difference between influence and impact? These are just a few of the topics we address in today's discussion. Support the show…

Today we dive a little deeper into musical comfort zones and chat about recent events where we stepped outside of ours. As usual, the conversation takes a bit of a turn from there, as we explore live performances that surprised us as well as the dynamic of politics in music. What can we say, we let the flow take us where it leads us. Enjoy! Support the show…

Comfort zones can be found in so many facets of our lives. From the food we eat to the movies we watch, much of what we take in resides in our own personal comfort zones. Music is certainly no exception, especially with such a wide variety of options available to us, but it seems most people don't explore these options. Why is that? Could it be they simply don't have time to seek things out? The musical landscape is as enormous as it's ever been and exploring an uncharted territory can be quite the experience. So, if you're feeling adventurous, maybe try branching out a bit. You might just enjoy it! Support the show…
For this week's #TuesdayTriplePlay, Craig offers up a wide variety and spotlights 2 recent re-releases from the early 70’s and then caps things off with a newly released album. Sometimes you hear something and there's an immediate connection. It could be the style of music, a particular instrument or maybe the singer's voice simply puts you at ease. You're fully invested! Then there's the flip side, where you cringe at the very thought of a song or a band. Hence the topic of our discussion today! So, what's your musical sweet spot & what's your kryptonite? Is image everything? That was certainly the case for heavy metal & hard rock bands back in the 80's, but the music scene quickly shifted in a different direction in the early 90's. Grunge was king and anything glamorous or flamboyant in appearance was no longer cool; quite the opposite actually. To this day there is a stigma attached to bands associated with the glam metal scene, even if they weren't technically glam metal. But if you stripped away the visual and simply listened to the music being played, would you hear it differently? We would venture to say yes, but we're admittedly biased since we grew up loving heavy metal. So, what do you think? Can you separate the image from the music? Support the show…

In doing a little research, Craig discovered a troubling trend regarding #1 records on Billboard. Simply going back as recent as 2010 and comparing different genres represented year over year to present day, it appears the masses are craving less variety these days. The stats below are pretty telling. Year - # of Genres Represented 2010 - 8 2011 - 8 2012 - 8 2013 - 9 2014 - 10 2015 - 8 2016 - 8 2017 - 7 2018 - 8 2019 - 7 2020 - 5 2021 - 4 (so far) Of course, these stats are taken with "a grain of salt", as Billboard was the only resource used and only the #1 album is represented each week, but seeing half the number of genres represented today compared to 2010 is shocking...and quite honestly sad. So how to we add diversity to the musical masses? Not sure we have the answer, but we're happy to do our part to provide some variety. Support the show…

So, exactly how long should an album last? 30 minutes? An hour? It really depends on the listener & in most cases depends on the artist you're listening to. It might not seem that important on the surface, but there's a fine line between teasing the listener and lingering for way too long. And so we discuss... Support the show…
