Kyle Preston is someone who deserves every bit of success he gets. His work ethic is unmatched and to hear his journey and how he has stuck to the plan even when he wasn't getting the rewards was truely inspiring. Having had one of the all time great Super Rugby debuts a few weeks ago scoring 3 tries, it was an opportunity for Kyle to show the world he was as ready as he knew he was. Whether it was doing body weight exercises till tears, kicking and passing at the park by himself for 2-3 a day or avoiding all junk food from a young age, Kyle has definitely made plenty of sacrifices to get his opportunity. Some other parts that stood out for me were.. Where this drive for Kyle to train like he does come from How he handled non selection for being "too small" How hard the juggling of roofing and chasing the professional rugby dream is Why he decided to move to the Crusaders over his hometown Hurricanes Kyle clears the air on who is dad really is And heaps more! As you'll hear Kyle is committed to being the best player he can be and its clear that he has a huge future ahead of him. I hope you enjoy the episode and if you do please give it a share. The fact that Christian Lio-Willie is a qualified dentist still blows my mind! Almost every player I have spoken to has said it's too hard to juggle both but this man has done it! How he has got to this point has been some effort, juggling huge days of study while playing professional rugby, he mentions he had to plan every minute of the day. Having focused on his study straight out of school after a recommendation from his mum, Christian felt like he may have missed the boat on his rugby career as his peers all started making the teams. After an outstanding club season and then a very impressive debut for Otago, he'd done enough to impressed Razor to get him up to the Crusaders. A few years later after a couple of outstanding seasons for the Crusaders he was called up as an injury replacement into the All Blacks. This episode was inspiring hearing how hard Christian hustled to set himself up to succeed not just on the field but off it. He speaks openly about the struggles and has plenty of good yarns. If you enjoy this episode or there is a young player out there trying to juggle sport and study, please share it on to them. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.…

Get ready for one of the most inspiring episodes yet with the legendary lad Morgan Mitchell. Born deaf, Morgan’s journey to becoming a professional rugby player was never going to be easy. Although he was an absolute beast on the rugby field from a young age, he was always told that he would never be able to play professional rugby. Thankfully the man who is known for his stubbornness was not having a bar of it and did manage to debut for his beloved Southland stags in 2014. He has since gone on to play over 50 games for the Stags as well as playing overseas with the Toronto Arrows Kamaishi Seawaves and Houston SaberCats. This story is a great one about never giving up on your dreams and a great reminder of some of the obstacles you can overcome when you put your mind to it. Morgy is such a champion, a very funny man and like his brother Brayden can tell a hell of a yarn. It was an honour to be the first podcast to share Morgans journey and if you enjoy this episode then I ask if you could please like the video and let me know what you enjoyed about this one in the comments. With Super Rugby just around the corner, who better to talk to than the Super Rugby CEO Jack Mesley. The fact that Jack was keen to come on What a Lad and share his very honest thoughts on the game and where it is heading, is proof that this man will do what he can to grow the game. Transparency was a big part of what Jack wants to see going forward and he certainly leading the way with how open he was around the challenges Super Rugby is facing but also some great ideas he has around the opportunities we have in the game. We speak about the highly anticipated fantasy rugby game that was be live for the 2025 Super Rugby season which will be an absolute game changer. I left this conversation very exciting about the 2025 Super Rugby season, I do believe it will be one of the best yet and I was also left excited about where the competition and the game is heading. Jack will be an outstanding addition to the competition, he's a passionate rugby man who is a massive lad and I'm sure you'll enjoy this insight. Tom Walsh has been one of the best shot-putters in the world for the last decade so it was an honour to get him on What a Lad for this one. Plenty of people have suggested over the years to get him on and I can see why, he isn’t just good at what he does but he’s a massive lad with an incredible mindset which has seen him win Gold Medals at the World Champs (outdoor and indoor) and the Commonwealth games while twice picking up a Bronze at the Olympics Some parts that stood out for me were.. How he is sometimes awkwardly mistaken for the great Joe Moody. Growing up with Dyslexia and the challenges that came with that. His upbringing in all sports, a rugby no8, cricket wizard and shot put beast. How he ended up in shot-put and the unique lifestyle of a shot-putter Why he kept throwing at this years Olympics even with a torn abductor As well as plenty of great advice for everyone! As you’ll hear Tom Walsh is a very likeable character, who has had an incredible career to date and the best thing is that it is not over yet. Hearing the mindset that Tom has, I've got no doubt there's more success to come for this great New Zealanders. If you enjoy this episode please give it a share! Everyone who has played with Brayden Mitchell will testify that he is one of the greatest lads to play the game, he was a champion team mate on and off the field, who loved a good time and could always back it up when on the pitch. Some of the stories and reflections that the man they call Scratcher has in this episode were incredible to hear. He was so honest, held back nothing and can tell a seriously good yarn! Some bits that stood out for me in this one were... How hard the struggle of retiring from rugby due to a neck injury was for him His relationship with gambling throughout his career Getting his first contract straight out of school. Dealing with a lack of confidence in himself His relationship with alcohol during his career and during the transition post footy Dealing with injuries and his regret in how he attacked his rehab Becoming the Stags captain and the pressure involved with that And honestly some of the best behind the scene stories of a professional rugby player you will hear. I've got so much time for Scratcher, just a champion human who played the game for enjoyment and he certainly did that! Mark Nawaqanitawase has had one of the most eventful 12 months in sport! Firstly heading to the Rugby World Cup with the Wallabies before changing code to the 7’s format of the game for the Paris Olympics, where he narrowly missed out on a medal. He then changed codes again, this time to the 13 man game playing NRL for the Sydney Rooster to cap off what was an incredible 12 months. What stood out for me in this one was.. How his Fijian heritage plays a significant role in his identity and sports career. He emphasizes the importance of having fun while playing sports. How his Waratahs debut in Super Rugby was a dream come true for him. What it was like debuting for the Wallabies. How his transition to the Aus 7s team was a rewarding challenge for him. Why he moved to the Roosters. Adjusting to NRL required learning new rules and strategies. All the questions you want to know, fastest player, hardest to tackle etc! And heaps more! Mark is one of those players who is just a joy to watch whatever game he is playing, the way he can leap in the air, beat defenders and score tries! You’ll also learn in this episode that he is a massive lad, such a likeable character who has a huge future ahead of him. The life of a head coach can be as brutal at times and it's fair to say that Rob Penney has been on the receiving end of his fair share of public criticism. However, what I am excited to share with you in this episode is just what a champion man he is. From playing 100 games for Canterbury as a tough loose forward to becoming a Head Coach who has coached all around the world, the Rob Penney journey is a fascinating one! Some parts that stood out were... Firstly hearing his thoughts on the Crusaders 2024 season and expectations for 2025 What he remembers about the infamous name calling of the reporter Growing up in Canterbury dreaming of playing for them and then achieving that dream. Hearing how hard it was for a young guy coming into those environments back then How he made his transition into coaching Hearing all about coaching Canterbury, NZ u20s, Munster, the Waratahs, Shining Arcs. His recall on the Simon Zebo phone call with the Lions How his high optimism has got his through the tough times of head coaching And heaps more. As you'll hear Rob Penney has so much wisdom, he has had so many highs and lows in the game so was able to share plenty of gold advice from his experiences. This week on What a Lad we are joined by Hugh Pyle who in my opinion is the greatest Australian rugby player never to be capped by the Wallabies. Standing at over 2 meters tall, Hugh's combination of skillset and workrate has seen him have a remarkable career firstly in Australia with the Rebels before moving to France, where he became a centurion with Stade Français. He finished off in Japan with Toshiba before calling time on his Rugby career. In his podcast debut, Hugh shares candid insights about his life post-rugby, including his transition to a career as a mortgage broker. He dives into his unique method of reflecting on his career through four key pillars: enjoyment, playing form, salary, and game time, revealing the lessons he learned along the way. Hugh also talks about plenty of challenges he faced while playing which included battling with dodgy knees, adjusting to life in different parts of the world and even dealing with a serious brain injury. As you'll hear, Hugh is a massive lad, someone who's reflective personality makes for thought provocative content, he also has a great sense of humor, and can tell a yarn. I'm sure you'll enjoy this one and if you do please give it a share so I can keep bringing you great guest like Hugh. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.…

Hamish Kerr is officially the greatest High Jumper in the world having recently won Gold at the Paris Olympics. However, what you're about to hear in this episode is an insight into the mind of the Olympic champion and you'll be amazed at how close he came to bowing out in the Qualifiers which in his mind would have meant retirement. The pressure that come on one single jump is insane and when you need to be relaxed and in flow when jumping how you handle that pressure is the difference. Some other cool parts of this episode that should out for me was.. Growing up playing lot's of sports, playing on the wing in rugby How at the age of 11 he was arguably faster than Rieko Ioane His journey into High Jump and why he quit after school An insight in to the training schedule of an individual athlete How important your mindset in as a world class athlete Why he wasn't keen to settle on the split gold medal What made him take off to the middle of the Javelin field once he had won the gold And heaps more! As you'll hear Hamish is a very smart, open and honest man who gives so much gold (excuse the pun) in this episode. What he has done for High Jump and Athletics in this country has been massively and he is such a champion! If you enjoyed this episode please give it share and I will continue to bring you more great guests like Hamish. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.…

Christian Cullen is a legend. You only have to watch a few minutes of his highlights package to remind yourself how good he really was. The speed and agility, his ability to change direction at full pace, his deceptive strength, add on top his attacking mindset and his braveness in defence! He was a joy to watch. He's also such a champion man who prefers not doing things like this so super grateful to get him on. In this whopping 2 hour episode some parts that stood out for me How the working the milk run growing up helped his rugby Debuting for Horowhenua straight out of school against Jonah Making the NZ 7's sides with Titch and stories from Hong Kong and the Commonwealth games The old school nature of the All Black environment he went in to I loved hearing about some of the greatest tries ever scored How he ended up at 13 for a RWC His relationship with John Mitchell Why he left to Munster and his time playing over there Why he hated warming up And heaps heaps more. Growing up Christian Cullen was my absolute hero, he inspired me to play the game so to sit down with him and have this conversation was truely incredible. What I'm sure will stand out for you is how humble and down to earth he is, you certainly wouldn't think I'm talking to one of the greatest to ever play the game listening to this. When we talk about the greatest rugby family in this country ever, it's almost impossible to go past the Barretts. Kevin 'Smylie' Barrett was a Taranaki legend who also played for the Hurricanes, Beauden is a 100 game All Black, RWC winner and 2 x World Player of the year, Scott has captained the Crusaders to 4 Super Rugby titles and is the current Captain of the All Blacks, Jordie at just 27 has racked up over 50 games for the All Blacks and dominated where ever he plays. Kane was tracking the same path before 2 significant head injuries forced him to retire at just 22 years old. It was awesome to sit down with Kane and talk through where he is at now and how he looks back on his career, some bits that stood out for me were.. The battle between the Barrett brothers to be the Alpha growing up How Kane would fire up the Francis Douglas 1st XV side, once resulting in a yellow card The time Kane picked up his coach Neil Barns as a 16yo and dropped him on his head His pathway into NZ Schools for 2 years, Taranaki and the Blues What forced Kane into retirement and how hard that was to deal with How he looks at his brothers successful careers His new life of the farm And heaps more! This was such an incredible insight from such a champion lad, you can only admire the way Kane has gone about his life post footy and it was so cool to hear about his journey. Hosted on Acast. From playing for Canterbury straight out of school, to becoming a Crusader and All Black not long after. He then moved to Leicester were he won premierships over there, before injuries forced him to retire at just 30. Post playing he was always going to stay in the game and with his incredible rugby knowledge has gone on to become a great coach! Some bit's that stood out for me were... His relationship with his brother Nathan and their mindset playing together How hard it can be for a young 10 to come in boss the team around especially when one was your teacher the year before The massive influence Andrew Mertens had on him The night of the 96-12 win over the Waratahs and the story behind the front flip The 2003 and 2007 RWC experiences The struggle of wanting to keep playing when the body is breaking down The reality of the life as a coach and the impact that can have on your family And heaps more I loved hearing about Azza's mindset on how he approaches life, he's very grateful for every thing and he has a real passion for the game of rugby. In the last couple of years he has made every post a winner, rapidly climbing through the ranks after starring for Counties Manakau, carving up Super Rugby with the Hurricanes before heading of to the RWC with the All Blacks. It was here on the world stage where we all got to see the huge talent that this young man possesses and has got plenty excited about where he can get to. The beauty of this story is that Cam wasn't the star growing up. He didn't make the rep teams and at just 17 years old he was told that he had peaked. His incredible work ethic combined with his love for the game and competitive nature meant he did everything he could to achieve his dream and did he what! Norm Maxwell was pound for pound the hardest hitter this game has probably ever seen. At just 90kgs the All Black lock through himself into collisions like no other every time he stepped on the field. However you tell Norm that he's tough and he's not buying it. From growing up with feeling the field was the only place he was free and his first big collision being the first time he felt respected, Norm always was going to play rugby. His Crusaders contract came quicker than he'd ever thought and something that was was far from ready for. Throughout his career his battled with injuries and a sore body which took it's toll and forced him to change his identity as a player and a person. It's clear after this episode that players weren't prepared for professional rugby at the time and you can hear the struggles that Norm had to face not just physically but mentally and psychologically as well. This is one of my all time favourite episodes Norm is a story teller who is so open and honest and I know you'll enjoy this one! One of the great lads of Welsh and NZ rugby Johnny McNicholl is on What a Lad this week, after returning to Super Rugby in red hot form! Having started in Christchurch with Canterbury and the Crusaders, Johnny then spent 8 seasons over in Wales with the Scarletts as well as playing international rugby for Wales. Now he has returned to where it all started and is back with the Crusaders passing on his wisdom and ripping it up on the field. Some bits that stood out in this chat were... How setbacks early in his career fuelled him to work harder The confidence Johnny has always had in his own ability Why he decided to leave NZ rugby at a young age How tough it was for him to miss out on the RWC with Wales What made him send his address to a keyboard warrior Some epic yarns including one of him fighting Ray Lee-Lo at training As you'll hear the man they call J Mac is an absolute champion, someone who understands the game of rugby so well, he's always willing to help others and is just good value to be around. Sam Whitelock is one of the all-time greats of rugby! In this episode he discusses his recent decision to retire from Rugby and future plans. The man who is the most capped All Black ever has had an incredible career which was so cool to go through with him. You will be sure to learn plenty in this one! I loved hearing around Sam's mindset to the game, his consistency to perform in some of the biggest games has been special to witness. Also his leadership is something that has really stood out for anyone who has played with him and when you hear the detail he would go to to make sure everyone was on, you can see why that part of his game is so well respected. As you'll hear Sam is such a champion lad and you will realise why he has had so much success in his career. Dexter Dunn is one of the greatest Harness Drivers ever, period. His strike rate since he started out as a teenager speaks for itself. He was NZ's leading driver for 10 years straight, winning almost every big race there is to win in Australasia. He then moved over to America where he has quickly becoming the leading driver in America and the world winning over 50 Million in stakes! In this episode you will hear an incredible insight into the life of a world leading reinsman, from how hectic his schedule is having up to 8 meetings a week to handling the aftermath of a bad drive with online abuse being a big part of it. You'll also hear the genuine love and care that he has for the horses with a pretty cool story about the horse Christen Me who is still with him today. I really enjoyed this one, although a completely different sport there are so many similarities between harness driving and almost every other sport. Dexters mindset and competitiveness are what help him be so successful as well as some incredibly soft hands. As you will hear he is also just a massive lad, he loves a beer, loves his footy and can tell a yarn! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.…

Will Jordan is one of those rugby players who is just a joy to watch. He's fast, he's got all the skills and of course he scores plenty of tries. His strike rate speaks for itself, having scored 31 tries in 31 games for the All Blacks at international level and he's quickly approaching 100 if to add on his Tasman Mako and Crusader ones as well. However as we always hear on these episodes, the rugby professional rugby career is not just all good fun and scoring tries there are always ups and downs to go through with Will himself having had a tough run of late. Last year he suffered an unusual injury which had no time frame and left him struggling in a race against the clock to get back in time for the RWC. This year before the season has even started he's had to go under the knife on his shoulder which has ruled him out for the Super Rugby season. It was awesome to chat to Will about how he has handled some of these harder points in his career, as well as all the incredible things he has done recently including a very strong Rugby World Cup. As you'll hear, Will is one of the easiest guys to have a conversation with, he has a great mind for the game and is just an all round champion lad! Hosted on Acast. Matt Todd is one of the most understated Canterbury, Crusader and All Black legend there is! A man who just went about his work consistently every week racking up 20+ tackles, missing none and doing it all again the following week! There’s not many tougher than the great Matt Todd! Some highlights in this episode were… How much passion he has for the game from a youngster up until now. What he lacked in natural ability he made up for with hard work and the ability to keep turning up. Why he never saw Richie McCaw as a road block for his career more an opportunity. How he became the Crusaders defence coach a year after playing. Whether he thinks he could throw the boots on for the Crusaders this year? And heaps more, including some classic questions from some of you. After this episode I’m sure you will appreciate why there is so much respect for the great man down here. Tough, hard working and enjoys a good time which means he is of course a massive lad! An honour to get him on the podcast, I hope you enjoy the episode. Hosted on Acast. When I think of genuine superstars of Australian rugby, I think James O’Connor. He is the youngest ever player to play Super Rugby at just 17years old. He burst on to the rugby scene with his boy band looks and his incredible talent. At 18 he was playing international rugby for Australia and with that came high expectations of him as a role model, a role he wasn’t ready for. I loved this episode so much because you can hear in raw honesty what these young professional athletes go through when bursting onto the scene. James has had some incredible highs through his rugby but also some incredibly dark times, none darker than spending a couple of nights in prison in France. The cool part of this chat is hearing where James is at now, he’s loving his rugby more than ever, he’s has a really balanced life and is now content with the little things in his life. This is one of the most inspiring episode of What a Lad and as you’ll hear James is an absolute lad who has so much knowledge which he shares in this! Hosted on Acast.
