Hello and welcome to the Monday Breakfasts show, on today's show:Interview with Nadia Gavin from Harm Reduction Victoria about keeping safe while using drugs, stigma, upcoming workshops and more In response to the recent 9 news report — first on 60 minutes, then The Age and other Fairfax outlets, spearheaded by Nick McKenzie — Monday Breakfast spoke to members of Defend The Unions, Defend The CFMEU. Last August, the CFMEU faced baseless allegations by Fairfax Media, leading to the reactionary measure by Albanese's Federal ALP government: to put the — not only the Victorian branch — but all CFMEU branches along the eastern coast of the continent into a government-approved administration. Hundreds of democratically-elected CFMEU were subsequently sacked on the spot with no right to reply. Esther Van Arend, an outspoken critic of the administration and staunch advocate for workers' rights in the union, was sacked under questionable circumstances after speaking to journalist Nick McKenzie outside a coburg cinema late last year. Esther was fired by the administration with no legal recourse, in any other circumstances this would be considered unfair dismissal and she has not yet had a right of reply. Rob spoke with Dusty, Amelia, Julie, and Janine, four rank and file members of the CFMEU and members of Defend the Unions Defend the CFMEU, a community group of rank and file CFMEU members, including a small handful of delegates plus community members in support of the union. On today's show: - Last Tuesday the Allan Government announced that the public housing tower in Flemington, whose residents are currently part of an ongoing class action lawsuit, will be demolished and redeveloped without any new public housing. The decision involves what the Victorian government calls the 'Ground Lease Model' whereby the land is leased to a private company who will design, build, manage and maintain the sites for forty years. Rob spoke with Flora from the Renters and Housing Union to tell us more about this shameful move from the Allan government. The interview mentions this RAHU Fundraiser for the Union's eviction fund, taking place this Saturday at Mamma Chen's from 7pm. It also mentions a Noongar-led campaign to have Sister Kate's land returned to Noongar people. Within these laws, the Allan government plans to reintroduce the offence of committing an indictable crime while on bail -- which was scrapped in 2023 following the coronial inquest into the death of Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung and Wiradjuri woman Veronica Nelson in custody. The coronial inquest found that Victoria's bail laws were a 'complete and unmitigated disaster' that disproportionately impacted First Nations people, women and children. Maggie Munn, First Nations Justice Director at the Human Rights Law Centre and proud Gunggari advocate from south-west Queensland joined us on the show to speak about these harmful bail laws. Maggie is deeply committed to ending the mass incarceration of their people, and has spent many years as an advocate and campaigning on First Nations children, raising the minimum age of criminal responsibility, and youth justice.Tomorrow at 4:30pm there will be a snap action for Poccum's Law outside Parliament Steps, organised by Flat Out.- The show ends with a conversation with Jay Coonan, spokesperson for the Antipoverty Centre and a jobseeker recipient. Their proposed changes include the casualisation of salaried managers, cutting their overtime, evening and weekend pentalty rates, as well as their annueal leave loading in exchange for a 25% pay rise to $67,000; Rest times between shifts would be reduced to 10 hours from 12; employees could also waive their meal breaks during their six-hour shifts. To hear more about the proposal and how it would affect employees' working conditions, the secretary of the Retail and Fast Food Workers Union, Josh Cullinan spoke about this cause. This Thursday the 6th of February 3CR is launching the Queer Histories/ Queer Futures podcast. Created in collaboration with Arts Merri-bek, the project documents the collective history of LGBTQIA+ organising, activism and community in Merri-bek. On today's show:- On Tuesday last week, Midsumma announced trial for this year's march in which participants would not be allowed to wear formal uniforms. Armed security have also been banned from joining groups marching. In response to the decision, Victoria Police announced that its members would not march. Midsumma's announcement follows a community effort organised in part by No Police At Pride. On today's show: last week Hannah sat down with Erik Hayward from the Bob Brown Foundation to give us an update on the ongoing protests happening in lutrawita/Tasmania against native forest logging and mining in the critically endangered swift parrot habitatFrom the anti-imperialism fundraiser at the Schoolhouse Studio in so-called Coburg on Friday the 17th of January: Marcia Galea, speaking about Camp Sovereignty and the importance of showing up for Indigenous people here in Naarm and across the continent in protesting Invasion Day. These laws have 'disproportionately targeted enviromental defenders and advocates of action on climate change,' the report says. As such, cross-movement support among activists and those incarcerated has never been more crucial. To help foster this, Violet CoCo and Brad Homewood, both social and environmental justice advocates, have founded the Activist Reinforcement Movement.
