Thanks to Brendan Doyle for uploading the source recording for this week's Tune of the Week, Grey-Haired Dancin' Gal. I gave the tune another try. This version has a more Cajun swing flavor than the one I learned from, and Brendan shared with us the composer's background, so I thought it was worth another try. It's played slowly here and wants to b…

Learned from the fiddling of Mark Tamsula, a fiddler I respect a lot. Grey Haired Dancing Girl, however, is not one Mark learned from the collections of Pennsylvania's Samuel Bayard. The original source of the tune is still a mystery, but a 1990's jam in Maryland was Mark's source.Από τον JanetB

This Tune of the Week, Echoes of the Ozarks comes from a 1920's recording by Kansas fiddler Sam Long. His fiddling was said to be smooth and rhythmic, but I found this piece too crooked to easily play along with him. It also has lots of syncopation. It's said to resemble Little Old Log Cabin in the Woods.…

The Tune of the Week features a contemporary old-time composition by one who is super talented at it -- Arnie Neiman. He truly loves his dog and the tune Walking the Dog is a happy one, with Arnie's ability to create something unique amidst so many hundreds of tunes in our repertoire.Από τον Arnie Naiman

The river title is familiar, but this is a unique tune by "Papa Jake," a Virginia fiddler recorded by David Bragger of the Old Time Tiki Parlour. The TOTW presenter went up the neck, so I thought that would be an added challenge this week. The tuning is open C here, gCGCE. Normally the tune is played in the key of D.…
