Flood insurance is not included in most home insurance policies. If you live in an area with high-risk areas, talk to your agent about adding flood insurance.

A waterproof coating can be applied to basement walls to protect them from moisture. You might also want to stock up on supplies such as sandbags that can help prevent floodwaters entering your home. Last but not least, make certain you have flood insurance to cover any damage.

Contact your insurance company. Your insurance company should be contacted immediately if your basement floods. They will send an adjuster who will assess the damage and start the claims process.

Verify that there is no structural damage to your house. You must ensure that you are allowed to enter your home. You should note any structural damage, such as cracked pipes or cracks in the foundation of your home, for your insurance adjuster.

Clean Up Flooded Basement

Here are some tips to clean your basement after a flood.

Safety First

When cleaning out your basement, remember to always put safety first. Flooded basements can pose dangers such as electrical shock, mold and harmful bacteria.

When cleaning out the basement, wear personal protective equipment such as disposable overalls, rubber boots and gloves.

Take out the water

The first step in the cleanup is to get rid of all water. You can either use a sump-pump or a dry/wet vacuum. You may need to rent a professional pump if there is a lot water.

Dry the Basement

After you have removed all water, it is time to dry the basement. You can dry the basement by opening windows, using ceiling fans, and dehumidifiers.

Dehumidifiers help maintain proper humidity levels and reduce the moisture in the air. Fans circulate the air and speed up drying. It can take up two weeks for a basement that has been flooded to dry completely.

Clean and disinfect

Once your basement is dry it's time for you to clean and disinfect all surfaces. This includes walls, floors and ceilings as well as personal belongings that might have been damaged by the flood.

To clean all surfaces, use mild soap and warm water. To prevent mold and mildew growth, disinfect the surfaces after they have been cleaned.

Inspect for Mold and Mildew

A flooded basement can lead to mold and mildew growth, which can pose serious health risks. It is important to inspect your basement for signs of mold growth.

Mold symptoms include a musty odor, discoloration of walls and ceilings, and the presence spores. These telltale signs should be spotted immediately.

Steps to Prevent Future Flooding

These steps can help you avoid future flooding, whether you've been affected by one or more.

To prevent water from pooling around your house, make sure you clean your gutters and downspouts often.

A sump pump can detect excess water and remove it from your basement. Sump pumps can be powered by electricity or batteries, so it is important to have a backup power source in the event of an outage.

In an emergency, keep an electric generator on hand to provide electricity for your home.

A backwater valve is another tool that can prevent basement flooding. The valve is installed in your main sewer line and prevents stormwater and sewage from returning to your home.

To reduce the amount of rainwater that flows into the sewer system, disconnect the downspouts or drainage pipes that lead rainwater from the roof. This will decrease the likelihood of a backup.

Regular inspections of your septic tank are necessary to ensure that it is functioning properly. Septic backups can be caused by a clogged or malfunctioning tank.

Seal all cracks and openings in walls, floors, windows, foundations, and foundations.
