The word ‘stick’, as a noun, means a thin piece of wood that comes from a tree. So we can say, for example:

1) Find some sticks and we’ll make a fire to keep ourselves warm tonight.

A stick can help someone walk.

2) Mr. Johnson is very old. He uses a walking stick when he goes shopping.

And ‘stick’ can be used as a comparison.

3) That girl should eat more! She’s as thin as a stick.

As a verb, ‘stick’ has lots of meanings:

4) He stuck his fork into a piece of chicken and began to eat.

5) The chef stuck pieces of meat and pepper on shish kebab skewers and put them on the grill. [put]

6) Barry, what should I do with these papers?
--Just stick them on my desk and I’ll look at them later. [put]

7) “Take your job and stick it—I’ll find somewhere else to work!” {A way to say "I quit!"]

8) She walked out of the restaurant and stuck me with the bill. [left me to pay for dinner]

9) It was hot and humid yesterday. My clothes were sticking to my body.

10) Stick that note on the refrigerator for me, thanks. [put]

11) He stuck the stamp on the envelope. {attached, put]

12) “You can arrest me, but you’ll never make the charges stick!” [Criminals are charged with crimes, like bank robbery, for example. If they are not found guilty, then the "charges" didn't stick.]

13) I tried to open the window in my bedroom, but it was stuck. [I could not open the window.]

14) We drove too close to the river and now our car is stuck in the mud.

15) He’s been stuck in that dead-end job for 20 years.

16) I lost some weight last winter but now I’m stuck at 50 kgs.

And here are some expressions:

17) My grandma refuses to get a smart phone. She’s a real stick in the mud. [Refuses to accept modern things, ideas.]

18) Don’t let your friends change your mind. Stick to your guns! [Keep believing what you think is correct.]

19) All my friends are getting financial help from their families. But my family is poor. I always get the short end of the stick. [Other people always do better than me.]

20) If you tell enough lies about someone, sooner or later some people will begin to think the lies are true.
“Throw enough mud at the wall and some of it will stick.”
["Stick a fork in me--I'm done!" When you're cooking, you can stick a fork in the chicken, for example, to see if it is done cooking. This expression plays with this idea to say "I've been working too long today and I want to go home!" or "I can't do this any more--I'm done!"]
