Why Others Are Not Open to Understanding Autism and Willing to Support Your Family

Whether you are in the grocery store, park, a holiday gathering, or a birthday party, you are going to encounter judgment. This can even happen in your own home!

There are times when others simply don’t have the experience or information to understand what is happening but are willing to listen and learn.

Then there are those, who aren’t interested in learning more and supporting families in the autism community.

This can be a sign of a low emotional intelligence, which is common in those who tend to argue, blame others, fail to listen to others, and generally have poor coping skills.

It is important to remember that you have no power over them. They are on their own journey in life.

Your journey is very different from theirs. You only have control over your thoughts and behaviors, which will ultimately impact your journey.

That means that you can choose to get hung up on what they’ve said or what they’ve done. Or you can choose to move forward and grow in spite of them.

You don’t just move on with a snap of a finger. You have to work at it a bit. The more you do this, the less time it takes to move on. It becomes second nature.

We all have different personalities, which are derived from a combination of traits we are born with and beliefs and experiences that we learn over the years.

These are things to keep in mind when dealing with others.

Setting Boundaries with Others Is a Form of Self-Care for Autism Moms

Moms raising autistics are often the most neglected person in the household.

They are focused on supporting their other children, spouse or significant other, handling the day to day of the household, and making sure their autistic child is safe and has all their needs met.

On top of everything else, they are met with opposition when others don’t get autism. It is easy to let loose and put others in their place.

However, it often causes more distress and shame when we realize that someone didn’t mean harm and was coming from a place of ignorance.

We have all been there, afterall.. haven’t we?

I have found that I save myself a lot of embarrassment when I dive a little deeper to find out where they are coming from.

Setting boundaries helps me to educate them on what works best for our family and why. They can take it or leave it.

So, it is a way to avoid compounding the issue, but is also important for your personal self-care. Because once it escalates, it impacts you and our child.
