Today when people hear the phrase “election controversy” they’re probably talking about a political election for public office, no doubt November 2020 will often be associated in American minds with the idea of election controversy. But for hundreds of years, another kind of election has divided Protestants all over the world. The late comers to the Reformation, the Calvinists, or Reformed theologians, sharply disagreed with the Lutherans. Later, the Arminians would place election at the center of their conflict with the Calvinists. But the doctrine of election was not only debated between the major branches of Protestantism. The doctrine of election was a great source of controversy for many American Lutherans in the 19th and 20th centuries—so great that it led to the dissolution of the Synodical Conference, which had once been the largest union of Lutheran synods in the United States. Today’s guest, Dr. John Brenner, has written his book The Election Controversy, to explain and examine the doctrinal issues and historical implications that have shaped the face of Lutheranism in North America to this day.
