The History Of The Evergreen State

The worst labor dispute in Northwest history has been dubbed the Everett Massacre and took place on Sunday, the 5th of November, 1916.
On that day, a group of Industrial Workers of the World, better known as Wobblies, took the steamers Verona and Calista from Seattle to Everett with the intention of speaking in support of a strike by nearby shingle-weavers at the intersection of Hewitt and Wetmore Avenues. They were prevented from landing by a team of citizen-deputies working under Snohomish County Sheriff Donald McRae.
There was a shot, then several minutes of gunfire that resulted in the deaths of two deputies and at least five Wobblies. 74 IWW members were detained and transported back to the Snohomish County jail when the ships arrived in Seattle.
