This week, Ira spoke with Brandon K. Winford, author of John Hervey Wheeler, Black Banking, and the Economic Struggle for Civil Rights (The University Press of Kentucky). In this historical episode of Ira’s Everything Bagel, Brandon talks about Wheeler and his sisters coming of age in Jim Crow Atlanta, Georgia; his role as a black business activist; why he was a member of the establishment who worked behind the scenes; how he (Winford) unlocked the doors to the Wheeler archives; why he (Winford) was surprised by Wheeler’s intellectual curiosity; and what he meant for the new South prosperity of the 20th century.
Brandon K. Winford is associate professor of history at the University of Tennessee. He is a historian of the late-nineteenth and twentieth-century United States and African American history with areas of specialization in civil rights and Black business history.
