Erick Allen, also known as EA, is a certified alcohol and drug abuse counselor with a mission to uplift individuals, families, and communities through the treatment of addiction and mental health challenges. He is the author of Affirmations for Recovery, a journal designed to help people heal from trauma using affirmations and positive self-talk. Erick has over 20 years of experience in recovery and is dedicated to supporting others on their recovery journey.

EA and I discuss the complexities of addiction and recovery, sparked by the case of Matthew Perry’s tragic death from a ketamine overdose. The conversation covers the ethical and legal responsibilities of drug dealers and medical professionals, as well as the challenges faced by individuals struggling with addiction. Erick shares his personal insights on recovery, addiction as a mental health condition, and the importance of connection in overcoming addiction.

Key Topics:

  • Addiction as a Disease: Understanding addiction as a mental health condition and its impact on decision-making.
  • Moral Responsibility in Overdose Cases: Exploring the ethical responsibility of drug dealers and doctors in overdose cases.
  • The Role of Connection in Recovery: How connection to positive influences, such as family and community, can help combat addiction.
  • Recovery Strategies: The importance of affirmations, accountability, and discipline in maintaining sobriety and preventing relapse.
  • Relapse as Part of Recovery: Erick highlights that relapse is a normal part of recovery and emphasizes perseverance.

Potential Listener Questions:

  1. How can we understand addiction as a disease, and how does it affect a person's ability to make responsible choices?
  2. What role do doctors and drug dealers play in overdose cases, and should they be held accountable?
  3. How can connection to positive influences help someone recover from addiction?
  4. Why is relapse considered a part of recovery, and how can individuals persevere through it?
