John 19:23-24 ESV

23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,

“They divided my garments among them,

and for my clothing they cast lots.”

So the soldiers did these things,

FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CAST LOTS

Crucifixion is extremely degrading or humiliating. Why? It involves the stripping of the person from his clothes. Jesus’ nakedness was part of His work as the Suffering Servant-King to defeat sin and present us righteous before God.

The first Adam began as a naked innocent person. Through his disobedience he became guilty and discovered his nakedness or shame. This was the reason why he and Eve sew fig leaves to cover themselves. However, Jesus, as the 2nd Adam, did the opposite. Jesus is eternally pure and righteous. Yet, He took our place. An act which couldn’t be easily understood. As Paul has said, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”[2 Cor 5:21]

As John Calvin writes, “Christ was stripped of his garments, that he might clothe us with righteousness . . . his naked body was exposed to the insults of men, that we may appear in glory before the judgment-seat of God.”

Matthew, Mark, and John record casting lots to divide Jesus' clothing. John adds the Old Testament quote from Psalm 22:18. It was a seamless clothing He wore corresponded with the seamless righteousness He has before God. While, the soldiers mockingly casted lots . His righteousness is available to whoever would believe Him.
